Set in small-town Arkansas, this sitcom radiates a rosy glow about life in a close-knit community. But far from being soppy, it is suffused with charm. It is also, gratlfvlngly, pitched to adults: the kids are relegated to the background while actors of the calibre of Marilu Henner, Hal Hoi-brook and Charles Durnlng strut their stuff. The GoMea Girls' (Friday, 7.30 pm. Seven).

Six years on and still going strong, this Is a real tribute to its creator, Susan Harris, and to the Inspiration of the changing roster of writers who have kept one of the most unlikely of sitcom concepts fresh. It boasts four of the funniest characters ever to share a kitchen. In an age where youth and beauty are worshipped, this comedy about four mature, single women sharing a Miami house has made the most of its edge: these "girts" are rowdier and more risque than a dorm-full of nubUe teens. Empty Neat (Friday, 8 pm. Seven).

This variation on the UttaM Nice' push from Susan Harris has widowed paediatrician Harry Weston (Richard Mulligan) sharing a house with bis adult daughters one a highly-strung, neurotic divorcee and the other a relatively composed cop. Travantl. PGR. 11.48 Close. Pleasure THESE are grim times. It's tough to find anything to laugh about In the real world: economic gloom, environmental disasters, global politics blighted by a dearth of participants with vision.

In such times, pleasure derived from entertainment might seem frivolous. Or maybe, as Preston Sturges suggested in his 1941 film masterpiece, 'Sullivan's Travels', In times like these you really need the laughs. I have a confession: I have been laughing, a lot For all Its (considerable) pep, in spite of mounting Irritation with the much bally-booed current affairs programs, and despite the slow death of quality drama series (ABC aside), there is a veritable bonanza of good comedy on TV. And It is situation comedy, that much-maligned, cheaple form. There Is virtually one must-see sitcom every night Here's my Top 10 listed In order of appearance during the week.
