Mention was made in the Pharos days ago regarding the attempt of the Gorman Baptist committee to get the Panhandle to make some suitable rate so that Logansport could land the meeting of the association here in 1900. Joseph Studebakar of Flora is in receipt of a letter from George E. Rockwell, assistant general passenger at Cincinnati, in which he states that he is uable to give the committee any encouragement, but has referred the letter to the higher authorities at Plttsburg. It looks- as though the Panhandle will not come down to the requests of the committee. Result of a Jag.

Emmett's friends, and they are legion, will regret his leave taking and will hope that the absence of himself and family from their home city will be but temporary and that in time they will return to their childhood home on the banks of the Wabash. Mr. Mulbolland's services have been highly appreciated by his employers and he has been called to a higher and much more responsible position, that carries with it much larger compensation.

Miller Released. He is again at work on the'sewer tranches and if he behaves will be allowed to work straight ahead. The bicycle deal will be pulled off in a few days. Tho council of Whiting, on Thursday night unanimously passed a raso- lution for the purchase of one of Obenchain Boyer's two horse combination chemical engines and hose wagons as heretofore spoken of in the the contract for the same has been received by the firm. This action is largely due to the fact of the Logansport council having given an order to the same firm for a similar, but larger engine. The Whiting council having come here to see Logansport engine and knowing that our city council had bought of home manufacturers, felt in pkcing their order. At the same time they had inspected many other engines and were best pleased with, the one manufactured here. This incident suggests the importance of standing by home people.
