Mr Edgley will also be bringing the Bolshoi Ballet to Sydney in July.

There is no chance of the ballets being staged at the Opera House. Mr Edgley said that using the Opera House, with its "postage stamp sized stases," would be a joke. Instead, they will have to be staced at the Capitol or Regent, with an extended stage. Baryshnikov, the 27-year-old dancer who, according to many critics, can already claim Nureyev's slipping crown, will probably not regret this. He slipped and injured his ankle at the Opera House in February.

Mr Edgley has several other exciting plans for next year, which are likely to give a big boost to Australian entertainers. An all-Australian version of the Broadway musical The Magic Show is to open at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne, in February. The rock music spectacular Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band On The Road a joint venture by Mr Edgley and the Sydney promoters Paradine Paterson is likely to open in Melbourne in late November and transfer to the Regent Theatre, Sydney, in February or March. The London-based Australian entrepreneur Robert Stigwood had a big Broadway success with Sergeant Pepper. Perhaps he could also have made the trains run on time. Rod Steiger has played Al Capone, and would have played Patton if he had not thought the film about the World War II general was pro-war. As so often in the past, the American actor immersed himself in information about Mussolini before playing the role. Part 'of the Steiger trademark is to live the character before he plays it.
