Box 64, Footscray. Vic, 301 1 CARL RACKEMANN, Australia's rebuilt and rejuvenated fast bowler, is a gentle soul with a famous sense of humour who craves the tranquility of farm life. He is also one of the most fearsome white bowlers on two legs. Last month in Perth, Rackemann demonstrated his venom by claiming one of his own teammates on the eve of the Test against New Zealand, smashing the Australian vice-, captain, Geoff Marsh, on the foot with a yorker and breaking his big toe. It was an unfortunate blow, delivered from one remote corner of Australia to another; the beef and grain farmer from Home Creek in Queensland's Joh Bjelke-Petersen belt putting on hold the career of the sheep farmer from Wandering in Western Australia.

Rackemann was doubly sorry for the mishap because he and Marsh had spent many hours on the recent tour of England discussing their common interest in agriculture. The tour of England might well have been Rackemann's last association with the Australian team, the closing chapter in a sad book of unfulfilled talent Rackemann went to England as a certain starter in the Tests but, after hurting his left knee in a match against Sussex early in the tour and undergoing an unsuccesful operation, he was restricted to a fringe role. Given the long history of ailments to his large, awkward frame, the 29-year-old was fast running out of chances. But the selectors gave him another chance in Perth, where his furious bowling helped set up a victory that Australia simply couldn't sew up. Remarkably, that Test was his first in five years and only the sixth of his career.

ties to get back in the side. That was always my aim." Rackemann loathes any talk about his ill-fated run of luck with injuries, which seem to be the combined result of his radically staccato bowling action and the spindly legs that prop up his large and powerful frame. He would much prefer to talk about the farm. Last season, for example, when the Queensland team was sightseeing in the country around Devonport, Rackemann went to the front of the bus, grabbed the microphone and went into a hilarious spiel about fence posts. "I was commenting on the type of fencing they use there in north-west Tasmania versus the type of fencing we use at home," he said in his Queensland drawl, as dry as a creek bed in a drought "The boys were spellbound." WIEN cricket is over, it will be back to Home Creek.

"I enjoy farm work, even though you finish the day buggered and with your hands blistered. On the farm the magpies don't come and attack you if you are five minutes late for work. You can run your own life." Rackemann's investment in the farm has consisted of more than just hard labor. After receiving a $25,000 downpayment from the South African Cricket Union in 1985, Rackemann bought his father a tractor that he had been eyeing at the local Kingaroy dealership. On the last working day before Christmas, Rackemann lured his father down to the local pub under false pretences and smuggled the tractor on to a distant paddock on the property.

On Christmas Day, his father was led blindfolded to his new toy. Any batsman in the country who has had to contend with his ability to make the ball rise viciously off the wicket and spear in at the head or rib cage will tell you that Rackemann is a far better bowler than that. "I don't enjoy facing him because you know he wants to hit you and hurt you," one opposing batsman said. "I hate batsmen if they're not out," Rackemann explained. "But once they're out I like them.

It's as simple as that" The reasons for his continued absence from the Australian team injuries and South Africa are well chronicled. Suffice to say that the South African sojourn put him out of circulation for two summers, and injuries (the list reads elbow, groin, heel, back, ankle, wrist, side, hip and knee) probably a couple more. Through it all, Rackemann has never lost sight of his ambition to return to the Australian side, moving down from the farm to live in Brisbane each summer. His laconic approach to life does not extend to cricket a subject he treats with surprising gravity. "When we went to South Africa we didn't know at that stage if we'd ever be able to play for Australia again," he said.
