Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday, August 30, 2000 39 Obituaries John Hearder, DSC Photographer 1913 2000 For many years, the photography showcase outside his studio near the original Theatre Royal in Castlereagh Street was a favourite among passing city pedestrians. It always displayed the latest glamour girl, celebrity, beautiful bride or man of the moment. John Hearder, who has died at 86, was renowned for his blackand-white glamour photography, with its dramatic lighting and individual style that so attracted a celebrity clientele in postwar Sydney. But he had other lives as a decorated wartime naval commander, yachtsman and entrepreneur. Born in Bromley, Kent, the eldest of three children from a seafaring family, young Hearder left school at 15, having been a frequent truant while he ran his first enterprise, taking tourists sailing in his dinghy.

One of Hearder's first full-time jobs was as a salesman for Fullers Chocolates. His personal flair attracted the attention of the company hierarchy in London and he was quickly promoted to manage a Gerry Edge, DFC Pilot 1913 2000 Ever the perfectionist, Gerry Edge, a dashing and successful fighter pilot, would always wear two wristwatches when flying during World War II. "If you're 200 miles out over the North Sea," he'd say, "doing, say, 250 mph, and your watch fails when you are trying to rendezvous with other aircraft, you are going to end up very lost or very dead or both." As a squadron commander during the Battle of Britain, Group Captain Edge, who has died aged 86, devised a tactic of head-on attack which had excellent results. Although Edge was credited with destroying some 20 enemy aircraft between the fall of France in May 1940 and September 26, 1940, when he was shot down, his true score which he tended not 1 to claim was probably nearer 30. Edge found himself at the heart of the Battle of Britain when in early September he received command of No 253, a Hurricane squadron which had lost three commanding officers and II pilots in three days.

Declining an offer to take the depleted squadron out of the southern front line and rebuild it in the north, Edge decided to risk confronting the enemy with inexperienced replacement pilots. Even his flight commander, Myles Duke-Wooley, had only 1 hours on Hurricanes. Edge was on a rare stand-down Abulfaz Elchibey Democrat 1938 2000 It was quite an achievement for a historian. Abulfaz Elchibey, who has died in Istanbul aged 62, was the first democratically elected president of Azerbaijan, although he lasted only a year in that post. Elchibey was elected president in 1992, a year after the collapse of the Soviet Union brought independence to the small country on the Caspian Sea.

His tenure was marked by his insistence that Russian troops and bases be removed from the country and that a national currency, the manat, be introduced. But his brief term was also marred by economic upheaval and military losses in the breakaway region of NagornoKarabakh, where Armenianbacked forces claimed 20 per cent of Azerbaijan and turned Joan Marsh Actress 1913 2000 Perhaps the last surviving actor to have been in an American film before World War Joan Marsh has died in California aged 87. After the Great War, she was to appear (albeit in relatively minor roles) with such great names as Greta Garbo, W. C. Fields, Joan Crawford, and Bob Hope.

Nancy Ann Rosher was born at Porteville, California, the daughter of Charles Rosher, an Englishman who was the chief cameraman at Universal Studios. Thanks to him, Nancy made her debut at only nine months, in a film called Hearts Adrift (1914). Charles Rosher was responsible for several cinema innovations including the use of stand-ins for stars in dangerous action scenes. Elchibey himself was forced to flee Baku in June 1993 when a small uprising at a military base threatened to plunge the country into civil war. He was succeeded as president by Geidar Aliev, the country's communist boss under Soviet rule. Aliev cemented his control later that year in an election that Elchibey denounced as fraudulent. In an interview just last month in Baku, Aliev said last month he had agreed to assume the office of president at the personal insistence of Elchibey. He quoted Elchibey as saying Aliev was the only person who could hold the country together and avoid a bloodbath.

Aliev was dismissive of his predecessor, describing him as a professor who lacked the experience to run a country and deal with the hired by Mary Pickford, and was responsible for the special effect by which that actress kisses herself in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1921). Though he soon divorced Nancy's mother, he continued to look after his daughter's interests. His association with Mary Pickford enabled him to land Nancy roles (under the name of Dorothy Rosher) in The Little Princess (1917), Johanna Enlists (1918), Daddy Long Legs (1919), Pollyanna (1920), Little Lord Fauntleroy (1921) and Tess of the Storm Country (1922). Although Pickford had been born in 1893, she played a 14-yearold waif in Daddy Long Legs, and a 12-year-old in Pollyanna, when she was 27. Nancy never viewed her as anything but a contemporary, and when Pickford's husband, Douglas Fairbanks, turned up she concluded that he must be Pickford's father.

Hepburn, Jane Russell, Sir Robert Helpmann and Rudolf Nureyev. Throughout this period, he exhibited extensively his glamour portraits and nudes and lectured to camera clubs. When the Sydney Opera House opened, Hearder produced a blackand-white photographic mural for the opera War and Peace that, at the time, was probably the largest ever made. One of his favourite overseas assignments was to photograph the Taj Mahal by moonlight, which resulted in an India Collection, exhibited throughout Australia. Hearder was deeply involved in Sydney yachting.

He raced on the harbour and his business interests included developing the Cammeray marina. When he retired in 1976, Hearder turned to pottery. It became his new great interest in a studio built at his Central Coast home. He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 51 years, their children Tony and Susie, and a son, Michael, from his first marriage. Tony Hearder Nancy Evans, OBE Singer 1915 2000 The mainstays of Hearder's photographic business were glamour portraits and weddings.

His reputation grew and he accumulated a clientele of celebrities, including local radio stars Jack Davey and Margo Lee. He also won photographic assignments with the Australian Ballet, the Australian Opera, the Phillip Street Theatre, the Theatre Royal, the Tivoli Theatre and the touring Old Vic Shakespeare Company. Stars photographed at the height of their careers by Hearder included Vivien Leigh, Katharine The mezzo-soprano for whom Benjamin Britten created the role of Nancy in the opera Albert Herring, Nancy Evans has died aged 85. Hers was a vibrant, evenly produced mezzo, which she deployed expressively and with an innate musicality. Whether singing Bach, Mozart, Schubert or Britten, she projected her tone on a pure legato and with a sense of the text.

Evans was born into a family of enthusiastic amateur musicians in Liverpool. As a child she was passionately fond of ballet, and used to act Shakespeare plays for her own enjoyment alone in her bedroom until she pulled a wardrobe over on top of herself. By the age of 14 she had turned to music and was taking singing lessons. At 17 she made her first professional appearance as the Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. In 1933 she gave her first solo recital in Liverpool and the next year made her London debut with Gerald Moore at the Aeolian Hall.

Her first appearance on the London stage followed in 1935, in Sullivan's Rose of Persia. The same year her father commissioned Decca to record her voice for her family. The company decided to sign her to sing the title role in the first ever recording of Dido and Aeneas. She was still only 19. In 1938 she sang in the Glyndebourne Chorus, where she means The surname Aliev is shared by a great many Azerbaijanis, and the two presidents were not related.

Elchibey went to Baku at 19 and studied Arabic at the university. He later became a history professor. He was also an active dissident and was jailed briefly in 1975 after protesting against Soviet policies in the region. As chairman of the national Popular Front party, he was swept into office by anti-Soviet sentiment in June 1992. Unlike leaders in neighbouring Georgia and Armenia, he was successful in forcing the removal of most Russian troops and bases from his country and moving Azerbaijan away from Russian dominance.

He realigned the country with Turkey, an alliance that remains strong today. He also changed those days) and was adapted from Alphonse Daudet's Sappho none of which saved it from being dire. In the same year, Marsh joined William Holden, Joan Crawford and Clark Gable in the gangster thriller Dance Fools Dance, which created a furore because Crawford stripped to her underclothes to dive into the sea from a yacht. Marsh also was the stupid wife who drove Adolphe Menjou to adultery in Bachelor's Affairs (1932). If she had a decent part, it was always in an unimportant film.

Her role as Lili in Anna Karenina (1936) gave her another opportunity to observe Garbo, though she was frustrated by the star's penchant for surrounding herself with screens on the set. Later that year, though, Marsh shared the lead with Ben Lyon in Dancing Feet, as a society girl who becomes a taxi driver in or- Summary Aldred A A Altmann Anivitti Barrelle Bathe Benson Birchell MC Bird Bouas Brown IT Brown Bugeja Busby Callow I Carter Cavanagh Coleman of death Cramer Daley A Davies A Davies Del Grande A Douglas Fenton A Finney Franks I Freeman ARP Gill I Gow A Griffiths BH Hennessy A Higgins Higgins Hodge I BIRTHS The baby is here and your FREE copy of 'Practical will be arriving soon. It was there that she met Walter Legge whom she married in 1941.

A daughter was born in 1942, but the marriage was short-lived. They divorced in 1948. During the war she sang in camps, armaments factories and air raid shelters; later she toured Holland, Belgium, France and the Middle East. Back at Glyndebourne in 1946, Evans shared the lead in the first production of Britten's The Rape of Lucretia with Kathleen Ferrier, who became a lifelong friend. It was there that she met her second husband, Eric Crozier, the producer-librettist and co-founder with Britten and Pears of the Aldeburgh Festival.

The Croziers bought a cottage near Aldeburgh, and from the beginning were intimately involved in the running of the festival. Between 1934 and 1967 Evans made more than 300 broadcasts for the BBC and appeared in Prom Concerts in the Albert Hall for 13 consecutive years. For years she and Crozier, especially after the death of the founders, were wise counsellors in the affairs of the Aldeburgh Festival, where she had many friends. Crozier died in 1994; Evans is survived by her daughter. The Daily Telegraph, London the alphabet from Cyrillic to Roman.

But Elchibey faced insurmountable difficulties in the heavily Armenian section of western Azerbaijan known as Nagorno-Karabakh. The Azerbaijan military suffered stunning defeats at the hands of Russian-backed Armenian troops and lost the region. He was driven from office in June 1993. He spent the next four years in internal exile. In 1997, he returned to Baku and tried to regain his influence as a leader of the opposition movement.

In 1939, after a liaison with Cubby Broccoli (later the producer of the James Bond films), she married George Morrill, a businessman. In the 1950s they spent a lot of time sailing with their two sons off California. Later, they bought a ranch at Ojai, northern California. Morrill died in 1977, but Marsh remained there, preferring to garden rather than mix in Hollywood society. "I never chose to be in films," she said.
