22- THE AGE, Thursday 28 March 1991 Sport Age Sting of Stillman finally shakes Vies from their Shield hibernation fx JL jv Victorian cricket coach Les Still-man recently commissioned a study of Victoria's batsmen to determine how often each was dismissed immediately after hitting a boundary, or on the fifth or sixth ball of a maiden over. The result of the study confirmed his impression that there was a disturbingly high Instance of both misdemeanors, and no doubt Stillman conveyed the figures and the appropriate lesson to the miscreants. But the moral of the story Is about the man himself. Captain Simon O'Donnell praised Stillman in Tuesday's afterglow as the single most important factor in Victoria's breathless ascent from the almost permanent foot of the Shield ladder to its top rung. We must accept it, for Stillman and Darren Lehmann are the only new faces In the team photograph, and Lehmann, by his own lofty He Introduced a minimum of three nights a week training, elementary, perhaps, but previously unknown in Victoria.

He introduced new training methods, gimmicks, really, but worthwhile for sustaining enthusiasm, for training can be a grind in any sport (ageing Queensland captain Trevor Hohns dryly remarked last week that he still enjoyed practice but not framing). Stillman fostered togetherness, even a suspicion of that time-proven "us against the world" outlook. He showed faith; for Instance, when Gary Watts was thin for runs approaching the Perth match, and glancing suspiciously at the drinks tray, Stillman told him he wanted him to play. Watts made two fine half-centuries. Stillman surrounded himself with his own para-cricket team, most notably Nell Barass, a sports consultant who was with Victoria when It last won the Shield, but which is to manufacture Test players as well as to win Shields.

But In the meantime, Victoria could do no more than to beat what was there, which It did, five times outright In 11 matches. There were also three first-Innings wins, which, with an extra half-hour or hour in each game, might also have been outrlgnts. Stillman was proud to point out that all five outright wins were achieved without availing declarations, the four In the regular season by bowling out the opposition and the fifth, in the final, by running down 239 on a fourth-day wicket for the loss of only two wickets. Stillman played down his' achievement, saying that his thoughts were well-documented and did not bear repeating. He deflected the showers of praise on to the captain and the players.

But it was Les Stillman they threw In the spa. had since fallen out of favor, and Mark Waters, a fitness trainer. Stillman challenged players to think. At an early session, he asked them to estimate how many outright wins In the previous 10 years of Shield cricket had been achieved by the team trailing on the first innings. He heard a range of guesses, and then provided the answer, less than 10 per cent, and the point was made, that it was no good trying to recover cricket matches, only good to win them from the outset As with any set of new ideas, not all were favorably received.

One aspiring Shield bowler lamented under his breath that Alan Connolly no longer came to nets to advise him on a series of problems. There must have been times when Stillman also doubted the wisdom of his methods, even the wisdom of taking the Job. In November, Victoria began its Shield campaign in Brisbane and crashed by nine wickets In a little more than two days, a traditional venue, result and margin. Stillman never thought his Job would be easy, but felt then that it would be even more challenging than he had first anticipated. His only public thought was that the team did not lack the wherewithal to win, Just the memory of how to go about It After years of Inferiority, It had a complex.

The turnaround came so quickly It was more like a double somersault with pike. The next week, In Melbourne, Damien Fleming bowled out NSW, Jamie Siddons batted Victoria to a 300-run lead, and Fleming and Merv Hughes bowled out NSW again for an Innings win. Victoria was to play only two more losing matches for the season, against WA In Melbourne and in the return match In both last month, and they could be NSL switch on finals venues Stylish Certmury ride to Qraetoe lK In Hi? f-inii I 1 iS Wtfei ap-fl mzk'-L GREG BAUM standards, had only a moderate season. Stillman brought with him from Adelaide two identical phenomena, Lehmann and an invigorating approach to cricket in which it was more important to win than not to lose. That struck a chord with O'Donnell Immediately.

Stillman brought modern ideas about cricket fitness, and soon the Victorians were panting through their paces In a gym two pre-dawn mornings a week. He reduced the state squad from almost 40 to 20, deliberately creating an elite. Stylish Century in a gallop on Tuesday, Monaghan decided he could not take a chance on the Jockey recovering fully by Saturday. "I tried to ring Malcolm, but he was at the doctor and he didn't get back to me," Monaghan said. When Monaghan arrived at the races yesterday he first approached Moses the four-year-old's regular rider until this preparation only to find that he was booked for the outsider Mocha In the Doncaster.

He then sought out Quinton. Stylish Century is an 81 chance on the third line of betting for the $1 million Doncaster (1600m). Monaghan also plans to back up the horse in Monday's $250,000 wta Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). Stylish Century, who has raced face as they have taken the corner. Last year, Curl Of Success and River Amos were destroyed after coming to grief at the bend.

Already in trials this week Cre-spin Planet all but fell at the same spot Two horses, Nlcanpa and Tiger Trap, were destroyed earlier in the week after mishaps on another part of the course. If the stewards decide to use the flat course, the distances of both Jumping races and the number of fences to be negotiated may have to be altered. The Von Doussa, to be run on Saturday, was programmed to be held over 3250 metres, and Monday's Great Eastern traditionally Is over 4950 metres. The section of the track in dispute was worked over with forks early this week and lightly coated with sand to help give it further stability, but stewards will have the final say on Its safety today. By TONY BOURKE, Sydney The merry-go-round of jockeys for Stylish Century In Saturday's Doncaster Handicap finally came to a halt yesterday when Ron Quinton took the ride.

The other Jockeys sought for Stylish Century included Darren Beadman, Malcolm Johnston and Kevin Moses. Senior part-owner Dick Mona-ghan engaged Quinton at Rosehill races yesterday because of a query about Johnston's fitness. Johnston, who had been on standby for the ride depending on whether Beadman would be available, has had a virus and had to pass up rides at Rosehill yesterday. League manager Peter Russell announced that in this year's finals series, home-city advantage would be given to the team that finished higher on the ladder than Its opponent Exceptions would be made, however, when home-ground advantage demanded that both finals on a particular day would be played in one city, he said.

One of the matches would then be relocated in order to cash In on an Interstate market "We have decided to reward a team's position on the ladder without abandoning commercial considerations totally," Russell said. Last year, the league scheduled finals matches solely on the basis of perceived financial vlabilldty. That resulted In Sydney Olympic being granted home-city advantage against Adelaide City, which finished fourth, in the elimination semi-final and against Melbourne Croatia (third) in the preliminary final. Olympic went on to win the grand final 2-0 against Marconi, which had fin-" Ished 10 points ahead of Olympic Pre-flnals placlngs on the ladder will be determined In the last bome-and-away round on Sunday. In its past three games, Victoria showed not only a lust for victory, but a willingness to roll up its sleeves and shovel Its way out of adversity. A former Melbourne opener, now playing In Perth, remarked when the Victorians visited In January that they were the closest-knit end most enthusiastic Shield team he had seen In town this season. The miracle happened before our very eyes.

Victoria won the Shield. Of course, there will be a deri- -slve element who will say that this was a hollow win, because of the long absences of the Test players and, further, because there were only two Victorian players on the West Indies tour compared with Ave from NSW.
