Statewide News Here's where you get great bargains: JMt Jkm Jfm SUSAN JARVIS COUNTRY MUSIC has been a long wait for Brent Parlane's second album, Tex Loves Daisy. But it seems that the two 4 -v AJ- fit Hfti itfHi ill in fill li BRENT PARLANE: New album no rehash of his first success. everyday love. It is Parlane's talent for writing about the small, simple, tender moments of life that makes him such a unique songwriter. This recording, however, takes a slightly different and somewhat broader slant It seems to go further beneath the surface to explore the undercurrents of uncertainty and inner conflict that affect everyone to some extent.

Parlane said the album shouldn't be read in a purely biographical way. "The problem I kept running into even on the first album is that this is a collection of songs written by me, but written over a period of years. "So what I tell people is, don't necessarily read into the lyrics of the songs a part of my lifestyle," he said. "Having said that, we all have our ups and downs and I do write about what goes on in my life. For example, A Million Years is most definitely about the one I love (Brent's wife, Penny) and an altercation we had and me ending up feeling guilty about it But I figure I'd rather write about that than pretend it didn't happen.

"And I suppose Mystery To Me is pretty well a love song that's based on reality. Although Wife Of A Prisoner, written years ago, is definitely not based on my life." Another song which has its roots in a very real and frightening social issue is Not That Kind Of Girl, which is a fairly uncompromising look at the hidden problem of date rape. It is songs like Not That Kind Of Girl and The Risk which give an edge to Tex Loves Daisy that wasn't there on Brent Parlane. However, Parlane said it wasn't a conscious thing he didn't set out to create that kind of album. "Two particular songs on this album, Mystery To Me and Tex Loves Daisy, are the best I've ever written," he said.

Certainly Tex Loves Daisy is one of the most superbly crafted songs that has been written in the past few years. Brent is particularly fond of the story that he tells about writing the song. "I was sitting on the beach the day John Lennon died and someone came up to me and told me the news. I'd just broken up with my girlfriend and I drove her home, then got back in the car and heard a radio report that Yoko Ono had been heard to shout 'No more! No more while the bullets were being pumped into Lennon," Parlane said. "It really affected me.

I burst into tears and pulled over to the side of the road and sat there crying. It was everything that the Beatles would never be The issue of marriage under threat is a strong one on Tex Loves Daisy and it is raised again in The Risk, which Parlane describes as "pure "I pictured an older woman watching a young guy go past, but then it ended up being a really good song, so I turned the words around so I could sing it and got Jo Campbell, who sings in my band, to come in and do a duet with me. Jo also features on Wife Of A Prisoner and another years nce Parlane released his debut effort, the self-titled Brent Farlane, have been a real time of growth for this talented songwriter. "I was very conscious that the second album would be the one that would test me after all, I had 20 years to write the songs for the first one," Parlane said. "Also, I'm not the most prolific writer in the world and I had a lot of other things happening like I was building a house in the country.

Also the record company wasn't in any big hurry and they wanted to make sure I was ready and it was ready. "If I had my way, I'd be happy to leave two or three years between all my albums." Perhaps other writers should take a leaf out of Parlane's book. Unlike many second, or follow-up, albums, Tex Loves Daisy is no rehash of the first success. Instead, it shows a significant musical, lyrical and emotional progression that marks Parlane as a significant talent on the Australian country scene and one who is definitely here to stay. Tex Loves Daisy was launched at this year's Tamworth Festival and the respect in which Parlane is held in.

the industry was demonstrated by the roll-up of artists and media. It was followed by a short concert spot, showcasing some of the tracks from the album, and had the audience spellbound. Parlane said he surprised himself with his reaction to the album. "When I got the CD, I listened to it from beginning to end like someone who had just bought the album and thought, 'Yep. That's not bad.

I'm proud of "It was a bit of a relief, actually. You usually manage to find something wrong and start wishing vou had done this or that differemly," he said. Fans of Parlane will remember that the previous album focused on family life and on the simple pleasures of home and Railway Hotel Sodens Hotel Motel The Termo Hotel Anna Bay Tavern Railway Hotel St Kilda Hotel Avoca Beach Hotel Ballina Hotel Westower Tavern Bayview Hotel Dudley Hotel Oxford Tavern Bellambi Hotel Belmont Hotel Horse Shoe Bay Hotel Court House Hotel Bowral Hotel Port O'Call Hotel Budgewoi Hotel Cecil Hotel Caves Beach Hotel Coffs Harbour Hotel Coniston Hotel Cooma Hotel Imperial Hotel Albion Hotel Amble Inn Corrimal Hotel Australian Hotel Lac Ian Hotel Dandaloo Hotel Central Hotel Western Star Hotel Westside Hotel Elanora Hotel George Dragon Tavern Windsor Castle Hotel Great Southern Hotel Edgeworth Tavern Empire Bay Hotel Entrance Hotel lllawong Hotel Cabbage Tree Hotel Albion Hotel Golden Eagle Hotel Empire Hotel Tattersalls Hotel Parkview Hotel Village Green Hotel Jervis Bay Hotel Inverell Tavern Tattersalls Hotel Lake Jindabyne Hotel Hotel Kempsey Kincumber Hotel Boomerang Hotel Springdale Heights Tavern Hydro Tavern Lennox Point Hotel Grand Central Hotel Nambucca Hotel Argyle Tavern Beauford Hotel Mayfield Hotel Bull'N'Bush Hotel Prince of Wales Hotel Lakeview Hotel Post Office Hotel Lake Macquarie Hotel Bay Hotel Central Hotel Moss Vale Hotel Woolpack Hotel Chincogan Tavern Railway Hotel Hylands Tavern Commercial Hotel Tattersalls Hotel Narromine Hotel Jewells Tavern North Nowra Tavern North Wollongong Hotel Archer Resort Hotel Empire Hotel Lakeview Hotel Royal Hotel Ocean Village Tavern Old Bar Tavern Hotel Canoblas Robin Hood Hotel Parkes Hotel Tallawanta Hotel Innes Tavern Queanbeyan Hotel Walsh's Hotel Federal Hotel Junction Inn Hotel Spinning Wheel Hotel Rutherford Hotel Salamander Shores Shortland Hotel Clubhouse Hotel peers Point Hotel Seabreeze Hotel Sussex Inlet Hotel Tamworth Hotel The Pub Terminus Hotel Royal Hotel Ryans Hotel Royal Hotel Unanderra Hotel Ocean View Hotel Marlin Hotel Thomas Blarney Tavern Riverina Hotel Tolland Hotel Turvey Tavern Hotel Empire Hotel Commercial Hotel Royal Inn Hotel Bayside Tavern Open Hearth Hotel Hastings Hotel Imperial Hotel Federal Hotel Australian Hotel The Stump Hotel Wodonga Hotel Pionner Tavern Oxford Hotel Royal Hotel Yamba Liquor Australian Hotel Albury Albury Albury Anna Bay Armidale Armidale Avoca Ballina Ballina Batemans Bay Bath ur st Bathurst Bel Iambi Belmont Bermagui Boorowa Bowral Bowral Budgewoi Casino Caves Beach Coffs Harbour Coniston Cooma Coonabarabran Cootamundra Corindi Beach Corrimal Cowra Cowra Da pto Deniliquin Dubbo Dubbo East Gosford East Mairland East Maniand Eden Edgeworth Empire Bay Entrance Evans Head Fairy Meadow Forbes Gates Head Goulbum Goulburn Gunnedah Grafton Huskinsson Inverell Inverell Jindabyne Kempsey Kincumber Lavington Lavington Leeton Lennox Heads lithgow Macksville Maclean Mayfield Mayfield Medowie Mere wether Merimbula Moree Morisset Morisset Moss Vale Moss Vale Mudgee Mutlumbimby Myrtieford Naroomo Narrabri Narrabri Narromine North Belmont North Nowra North Wollongong Nowra Nowra Oak Flats Oberon Ocean Shores Old Bar Orange Orange Pa rices Pokolbin Port Macquarie Queanbeyan Queanbeyan Quirindi Raymond Terrace Raymond Terrace Rutherford Salamander Bay Shortland Singleton peers Point South West Rocks Sussex Inlet Tamworth Tamworth Temora Tenterfield Thirroul Tumut Unanderra Urunga Ulladulla Wagga Wagga Wagga Wagga Wahgunyah Wallerawang Waratah Warners Bay Warrawong Wauchope Wee Waa Wellington Wingham Wodonga Wodonga Wollongbar Wollongong Wyong Yamba Young together again and that I had broken up with my girl. "That memory stayed with me then it all came together with this graffiti on a wall near where I fived, from about the same era it had been there for years. "I was always kind of jealous of Tex and Daisy, thinking how much in love you would have to be to do something like that I always wondered whether they were still together they were sort of my touchstone.

It was a constant "One day I had this brainstorm and put it all together in one song. It's probably the best thing I've written." A newsworthy event also inspired another of the album's best songs, True Believers. 'True Believers was written on a March 13, which is my wife's birthday and was also the date of the last Federal election. We were at the pub celebrating Penny's birthday and the election got pretty exciting. Paul Keating, after his shock win, said something about it being a victory for the true believers," Parlane said.

"The song is about drawing a parallel between them whoever the true believers are and me and my wife, among all our friends, being one of the last married couples. It's looking at whether we believe more than them, or if we just got lucky." major country star, Jane Saunders, joins Parlane for a beautiful duet version of That Lovin' You Feeling Again. The pair had already recorded Love Hurts as a duet and scored themselves a Group or Duo of the Year Golden Guitar finals nomination with it this year. Parlane's other nomination was for the album's first single, Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, which took him into the Male Vocalist final something he was thrilled about He is even more excited now the song is No 1 on country charts his first ever No 1 hit Parlane is now taking to the road to promote Tex Loves Daisy.
