No mews una ood news for Ten be. GONE BUT NOT TALKING: Anne Fulwood will not say r-wlJaj why she has left Ten. STAYING: Webster BLAST: Feneley. GONE: Phillips. Ten dumped weekday current affairs last year after replacing Hinch with Alan Jones Live which was axed after 13 weeks.

"When Alan Jones Live failed it gave them an excuse to get out of daily current affairs altogether," Feneley said. "One has to wonder whether that wasn't their agenda in the first place and one has to wonder whether they won't do the same to news." Channel 10's 5pm bulletin wins about 180,000 viewers a day compared with National Nine News' 500,000 regular viewers and Seven Nightly News' 350,000 viewers at 6pm. Ten's late news at 10.30pm draws about 155,000 viewers a night, usually running second in its time slot. "One has to question whether the cost of providing a news service outweighs its ratings value to the network," Feneley said. Ten, which has found a niche in being the profitable but lowest-rating commercial network, has cut news costs, replacing the hire of twin-engined helicopters with single-engined helicopters and cutting the number of camera crews to nine, three of which are Single camera operators.

The introduction of single-engined helicopters caused concern among cameramen, some of whom refused to fly in them because they are too dangerous. No replacement for Travers, whose resignation takes effect on November 1, has been appointed. Ten's Sydney general manager Gerry Thorley and Sydney news editor Rick Willis will supervise the day-to-day running of the news room. A Ten spokeswoman denied Ten management would axe the news service. Waterco TurboTuf may look like any other pool pump on the market but we all know appearances can be xJ.ha y.

By RACHEL BROWNE PAST and present staff at Channel Ten believe the news service might be the next to go. The defections of high profile news readers Anne Fulwood and Juanita Phillips, Melbourne anchor David Johnston and Melbourne news editor Neil Miller were capped on Friday by the resignation of head of news and current affairs, Carmel Travers. It is believed Ten's board recently voted on whether to keep the news, a vote which was narrowly won. Former Ten reporter Stephen Feneley said Ten's owners, Can West, appeared unconcerned about the quality or performance of news, stripping staff levels and budgets to a bare minimum with Travers firing the bullets. "They show no commitment to the product or the people who make it so why should the staff show any commitment to he said.

"There is nothing stopping Channel 10 from getting out of news that's what they want to do. They don't seem to care about the quality or the performance of the product as it is. "Anne Fulwood would have heard this, Juanita Phillips would have heard. That's why they're no longer there." They show no commitment to the product or the people who make it so why should the staff show any commitment to them? Channel 9 reporter Damian Ryan, who worked at Ten for four years before and during the Travers regime which began in June 1993, agreed that staff became disaffected when Travers made promises and failed to deliver. Ryan said the rumours that Ten would either axe the news service entirely or network it had been around for a couple of years.
