The Falcons began the onslaught after only 36 seconds when Brian Bothwell scored, followed closely by a John Waddell free kick that found the net. Marcus Stergiopoulos kept up the home side's momentum with a clever lob over UTS keeper Mike Gibson two minutes into the second half and Ernie Tapai finished off a free-flowing move to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead after 53 minutes. Olympic pulled back two soft goals through Adam Ciantar and substitute Elias Augerinos. In other matches last night, defending champions Melbourne Knights dominated with 24 shots on target to Marconi's three to win 2-0 at home; the Newcastle Breakers kept intact their unbeaten home record with a 1 -1 draw with West Adelaide; and a powerful last-minute strike by South Melbourne substitute Steve Mangos snatched a 2-1 away victory against Adelaide City. Knights skipper Andrew Marth was rewarded for a lionhearted display in mid-field when he scored the opener in the 64th minute and Joe Spiteri wrapped it up in the 90th.

Playing a perfect tactical match to counter Wests' midfield, Newcastle recovered from conceding a third-minute goal to equalise through Jason Bennett five minutes later and pin the visitors in their own half for most of the match. Adelaide City looked set to share the points with South Melbourne before Mangos's free-kick left Zebras keeper Jason Petkovic stranded. Damian Mori equalised for the home side in the 66th minute after Socceroo Paul Trimboli gave the visitors the lead in the 37th minute. Queensland 14 Northern Territory 0. El j5 TENNIS Obituary JOEPEARCE 1910-1995 With giant hands that could hold a football as most men would handle a cricket ball, Joe Pearce made his name as one of the rugby league's greatest second-row forwards. His death this week, at 85 after a long illness, has severed a historical link dating back to the birth of the game in Australia. "Joe" (real name Sidney Henry William Pearce) was the son of "Sandy" Pearce, an original Kangaroo in 1908 and himself an all-time great hooker. He grew up close to the water at Sydney's Double Bay.

The family fished there commercially for more than a century. Pearce began his sporting career playing "the Australian as Aussie rules was known in the early days, playing first-grade rules for Eastern Suburbs in 1928 and 1929. But he turned his back on rules midway through 1929, and made his first-grade debut in Easts' league team the same year. He represented Australia for the first time in 1932, cutting his teeth in Test football in what has become regarded as the most brutal Ashes series of all time. He was the last surviving member of Australia's team that defeated England 15-6 in the epic Brisbane Test of that series remembered as "The Battle of It was a hectic initiation for any 22-year-old, but Pearce's strength, menial and physical, was well recognised, and he became an automatic selection in Australian teams from that point He toured with the Kangaroos in 1933-34, retracing the footsteps of his father, who made the trip in 1908-09 and 1921-12.

He played 24 games on tour and was a key man in a desperately-fought Ashes battle. He returned to England in 1937-38, but only as a passenger after breaking his leg in New Zealand. At club level, Pearce stayed at Easts until 1942, and added starch to one of the most formidable club teams of any era. He remained in the Eastern Suburbs district for another 50 years, continuing the family's wholesale and retail fish business. His funeral will be held today at St Mark's Church, Darling Point, at 2.30 pm.

Goal-scorer with heart of pure gold OBITUARY REGINALD THOMAS DATE 1921-1995 Cricket great Keith Miller still speaks fondly of Reg Date as "definitely one of the finest men I ever Miller said he was "devastated" when Date died in August and "I still can't quite believe "He had a heart as big as a hunk of gold, a flair for helping people," Miller said. Reginald Date, or "Datey" to his many friends, was a former coalminer then publican who rose to enduring Australian sporting fame on the strength of his prodigious goal-scoring ability at all levels of soccer. Herald soccer correspondent Michael Cock-erill has written that Date was "regarded by many as the most talented soccer player this country has and there seems ample evidence to bolster the claim. Although Date was of that particularly gifted generation of sportspeople whose careers were interrupted by World War II, his goal-scoring feats will probably never be surpassed. He still holds the record for most goals scored in an Australian interstate match with no fewer than eight when NSW beat Queensland at Ipswich in 1946; and in his total eight appearances for Australia he scored nine goals.

Beyond the dry data of goals scored and international matches played, though, the enduring memory is the man himself. By all accounts, Date was possessed of a particular magnetism. Reg Date is survived by his wife Millcie and his two sons Michael and Stephen. Supplementary Report Trainer Mitchell today reported that PALM BEACH BABE received a laceration to its right hind leg during the running of Race 6. the Tooheys Blue Boch Handicap 1200m at Rosehill on Saturday.
