The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday, October 8, 1992 45 CYCLING MOTOR SPORTS GOLF Spobt fiver Butch Magee counted out by nagging injury Lack of sponsors kills off top event JOHN MACDONALD ready to opt I Ttl for coy start Eifv I i IPc if I I (w" I 8 MELBOURNE: Injured Australian motorcycling champion Kevin Magee has pulled out of the 11th round of Sunday's All-Japan SOOcc championship at Sugo. Magee broke two toes and two other bones in his left foot when he crashed more than a week ago while testing his factory Yamaha YZR500 at the 3.73km circuit. He was preparing for this weekend's ride which is the second last in the Japanese series. Magee had a plate inserted in his foot last Wednesday and has spent the past week resting the limb to try to be fit in time. But he announced yesterday he had lost the battle but still planned to make it for the Australian round (the 11th) of the Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island on October 15-18.

Magee is leading the All-Japan 500cc championship series. "Missing the Sugo race will mean forfeiting the championship lead to fellow Australian rider Daryl Beattie," said Magee. "Hopefully I'll be able to con Kevin Magee sad blow test the final round at Tsukuba Raceway on November 1 and overtake any points advantage Beattie gains this weekend. "Presently I'm concentrating on getting 100 per cent right for the Phillip Island World Superbike meeting." Orthopaedic specialists have developed a special lightweight and streamline cast for the left foot complete with a hinge at the ankle to allow Ma gee's foot extra movement during physiotherapy. RUGBY Kahl cleared to leave with the Wallabies Next year's NSW Open has been cancelled because of lack of sponsorship.

NSW Golf Association president John Lugsdin said last night the association had been trying for some time to arrange adequate sponsorship, but time and the economic climate had beaten it. The Open was to have been held at the Manly course. It dates back to 1931 and has traditionally been one of the leading events on the Australian calendar. The Open attracted strong crowds in the mid-1980s when Greg Norman was at his most popular and when it was sponsored by Panasonic. When sponsorship diminished, so did the Open's status, and it was shunted off to Bathurst in 1991 before returning to Ryde-Parramatta this year, where it was won by Craig Parry.

Lugsdin said attempts would be made to restore the Open in 1994. Meanwhile, leading British players Colin Montgomerie and Steve Richardson are confirmed starters for the Johnnie Walker Classic at Royal Melbourne from December 3-6. Montgomerie has not won this year but has had a consistent season on both sides of the Atlantic, with several top-10 finishes, highlighted by third placing in the US Open behind Tom Kite after being once hailed as the winner. Like many rookies before him, Richardson has found it hard to consolidate after bursting through in 1991 with wins in the Girona Open and Portuguese Open and second place on the European Tour moneywinners' list. British Open champions Ian Baker-Finch (1991) and American Mark Calcavecchia (1989) are already confirmed Classic starters.

Dual Classic winner Peter Senior will be defending his title. Winning the first Tooheys criterium race around the Opera House today may not be a tactically correct manoeuvre for Dutch cyclist Mario Van Baarle. Van Baarle, who is in Sydney for the five-race criterium series, said the first race of any meet, whether it be circuit racing around the towns or stage races, was more for sorting out the serious contenders from the also-rans. "If I win the Opera House race, then I will have every single rider on my tail for every other race in the series," he said. "I'd prefer to watch the field, work out who is strong and needs to be watched and bide my time in one of the other races where I can get away being tailed." Even so, tactics play less of a part in criterium racing than in stage racing, largely because the rest of the field can see the length of any breakaway in the invariably tight courses.

Van Baarle predicts a bunch sprint finish for the Opera House event, which will start at 12.30pm and race for 40 minutes plus five laps of the. one kilometre circuit. Of the criterium specialists in the 90-strong field, many of whom will back up later for the eight-day Pacific Power Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic, Baarle is impressed with Seoul Olympian Brett Dutton, who he has seen race in Holland. But he is unsure of the other contenders, although he has competed against and heard much about Australian Institute of Sport cyclists Patrick Jonker, Jamie Kelly, Darren Smith and the national criterium champion Robert McLachlan. "Most riders we know because we have seen them in Europe," Van Baarle said.

"But really it only takes one race, or maybe only 10 minutes into one race to see who is capable." Greg Dwiar (Taubmans Paints) has just returned from a two-year stint in Germany and looked strong at last week's Australian road cycling championships. Smith, 16th at the Barcelona Olympics, is a cyclist noted for his quick acceleration while his Olympic teammate, track cyclist Henk Vogels could be another speedster to watch in a bunch sprint to the line. In the five trips to Australia for the Tooheys series and Bank Classic, Van Baarle has noticed a marked improvement in the JACQUELIN MAGNAY standard of Australian cyclists. He thinks they will be serious contenders for any one of the five criterium races, although he believes the German Bosch and Polaroid Unified (Russian) teams are particularly threatening. "The Australian style of riding hasn't changed, but their tactical awareness has," he said.

"They are much better for the benefit of riding alongside Europeans. "Now they know what is going on in a race. "They too, have realised that they have to have eyes everywhere, and have to have the astuteness to know which breakaway to go with. "In a split second you have to weigh up whether it is worth chasing someone how many points have they got in the series, how threatening are they, how capable are they of staying out in front." If German rider Thomas Liese gets out in front, the entire pack, apart from his German teammates will be working hard to peg him back. Liese, who won the Bank Classic last year is in particularly strong form, having won a stage in the Tour of Saxony and winning the famed Grundig Cup.

The 1991 Bank Classic winner Vladimir Golushko and his Russian teammate Alexandre Nadobanko have also commanded pre-race favouritism. For the first time the criterium series, apart from the Opera House race, will be held in twilight under lights. "It makes the race look a lot quicker for the spectator because of the shadows," Van Baarle said. "But it makes no difference to the riders, although it will be a nice change to ride in the evening. "It will seem more like a track race." The Opera House race will start at 12.30pm, and then the cyclists will compete at Church Street, Parramatta on Friday, October 9 at 7pm; Mudgee, Saturday, October 10 at 6pm; Gunnedah on Tuesday October 13 at 7pm and Port Macquarie on Thursday October 15 at 7pm.

GREG GROWDEN Queensland five-eighth Paul Kahl will leave with the rest of the 30-man Wallaby squad for Ireland and Wales tomorrow, although he will miss the opening tour match against Leinster on October 17. The Australian management have overcome the situation which saw Scott Gourley miss the 1989 Wallaby tour of France because he was not available for opening matches with a broken hand, by stating yesterday that as the players were in a training camp they were already on tour. Also Kahl had been passed medically fit at the start of the training camp. This has saved Kahl, who is now striving to play the second tour match against Munster in Limerick on October 21, after damaging ankle ligament at training in Sydney on Tuesday. Kahl will not train before the team leaves Sydney tomorrow, and instead will receive intensive treatment from the team's physiotherapist Greg Craig.

An Australian Rugby Football Union player census meanwhile has revealed that youth rugby participation has increased by 21.9 per cent this year. The figures also show that playing numbers have increased by nearly 40 per cent over the past two years. In 1990 there were 65,598 boys and girls under 19 years playing rugby. This figure has now increased to 91,456. There are now 137,401 senior and youth players in Australia, which includes 13,020 Golden Oldies representatives.
