A-8, THE TUSTIN NEWS. ThurH Nc RELIGION Catholic Bishops Rejoice Basket Ministry Begins At Trinity Presbyterian Prop 161 At Defeat of Religious leaders of many denomi nations spoke out strongly against Proposition 161, which was defeated by California voters during last week's general election. Among those spearheading the fight against the initiative that would have allowed physician-assisted death, were members of the California Catholic Conference of Bishops. When the returns were in, the Most Rev. John S.

Cummins, bishop of Oakland, and president of the bishop's group issued this statement: "We are very grateful that many California voters have so re- jected Proposition 161. The cen- turies-old struggle to narrow the limits for the taking of human life in civilized society is still to be treasured. "Concern still continues, however, about undue suffering on the part of the sick and unnecessary intrusion of medical technology into the natural course of dying. There remains, then, a continuing desire on the part of some to legalize killing of sick and dying people. "We thus restate that such legislation is a moral error, contradicts our own political tradition and inevitably undermines the integrity of the medical profession.

We reaffirm the Musical Tribute Orange Coast College's Wind Ensemble will offer a tribute to the music of the film industry during its fall concert on Sunday afternoon. The ensemble, under the direction of music professor Dana Wheaton, will perform at 3 p.m. in college's Fine Arts Recital Hall. wisdom that teaches us always to care, never to kill. Although it may sometimes appear to be an act of compassion, killing is never caring.

"Our merciful and continuing response, although a more challenging one, remains with greater development of care such as has been experienced in the hospice movement, where the sick are placed in a setting, perhaps even at home, where they receive the greatest possible attention amid family and friends. Furthermore, we are aware that the medical profession can do more to develop their own palliative skills for pain management. Relief of pain is moral, even when the administration of drugs limits bodily and mental strength. "Finally, the medical profession, hospital personnel and churches can ally themselves to encourage the effective use of the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, which allows for the appointment of a friend or family member to oversee one's medical care, when we are too ill to make such critical decisions. This surrogate understands our mind and wishes and will counter the fear on the part of many of having to suffer unnecessarily or in a prolongered manner.

"I strongly encourage all of our people to pursue these positive goals," he concluded. The California Catholic Conference includes the Archdioceses of Los Angeles and San Francisco, the dioceses of Orange, Fresno, Monterey, Oakland, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Jose, Santa Rosa and Stockton, plus the Byzantine Rite Eparchy of Van Nuys, and the Eastern Rite Diocese of St. Maron.
