Drama featuring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. Subtitles, for the hearing-impaired. INTRIGUE On Nine at 8.30 pm THE icy synthesiser music. The grey major European capital city backdrop. The muscly Scott Glenn as a stalwart American hero Intrigue screams cold war drama from the first few frames.

The title, however, is something of a misnomer intrigue being the ingredient that is largely lacking from this decently done, attractively cast but almost depressingly straightforward spy plot. Glenn, our man in Brussels, is sent on a mission into Romania to bring back a former American Intelligence officer who defected to the Reds some years previously. Things are complicated by the fact that the traitor (played by Robert Loggia) is Glenn's old friend and tutor. Or at least things should be Programs supplied by TV channels. Both will obviously feature highly in the range of magazines which exist solely to have this new breed of star on their covers.

Michaelson is an unassuming young man from Mt Waverley, an outer suburb of Melbourne, who looks as if he was plucked from a surfboard at Bell's Beach by a cigar-chomping Grundy's talent scout. This, apparently, is not so far from the truth, as the soaps are now looking for raw talent rather than drama-school types who will turn up their noses at any script not written by Michael Gow. Scott's panel-van accent, by the way, is genuine. Michaelson has the slightly nervous look of someone whose life is about to be changed forever. Will he ever be able to walk to the local milk bar again without being attacked by a pack of screaming schoolgirls? My guess is he hopes not.

James Cockington NEIGHBOURS On Ten at 7 pm LAST week, Grundy's celebrated the completion of the episode of Neighbours, confirming the show's position as the Bradman of Australian soapies. The only other epic to approach this milestone has been the late, lamented Young Doctors. They switched off the life support system around the 1 episode. No-one noticed the difference. Despite some roller-coaster ratings of late, Ten still believes there is life in Ramsay Street and is introducing some new, young residents this week.

Rachel Blakely, 23, and Scott Michaelson, 20, conform to the teen hunkspunk category that has made Street such a fun place to visit. Gaby and Brad, as they will become better known, appear as a boutique owner and her brother. EI T7 News And 8.50 SUBJECT TO LATE ALTERATIONS. complicated by that. Intrigue doesrt bother getting into stuff like why the man went over or adequately explore why he should suddenly want to return. As is often the way with telemovies, there is an impression of large chunks having been sacrificed to fit into the unsympathetic time frames of commercial television. Some good actors barely get a look in, including pre-The Manageress Cherie Lunghi strange as it is these days to see her without a soccer ball. The production is cursed with the "misfortune" of having been mounted in 1988, at a time when the Iron Curtain was being replaced by an aluminium one.
