SHIPPING LYON, Tuesday: World chess champion Garry Kasparov gained a clear win in his title match against Anatoly Karpov today with a 36-move draw in the 24th and final game. Kasparov won the match by a score of 12-12 to 11-12 with four wins, three losses and 17 draws. He offered a draw on Monday after Karpov's position became desperate.

Kasparov's reward is the SUS1.7 million (SA2.21 million) share of the SUS3 million (SA3.90 million) purse, together with a diamond-studded bronze and gold trophy worth an additional SUS1 million (SAI.30 million). A mercy draw to clinch a match occurs quite often at the title level but not usually between these two rivals. "I'm not satisfied with the result of the match. I offered a draw in a completely winning position because I just didn't want to play anymore," Kasparov said. I think my advantage in Lyon was much bigger than just a one-point advantage actually I think two points was fair because Karpov played quite well.

Kasparov said he had encountered problems because his preparation had been shorter than planned and Karpov had been the best-prepared opponent he had faced. The champion also considers his arch-rival the favourite to return as the challenger in three years' time, which would be their sixth consecutive title match. "It depends on Karpov of course. I would say that Karpov has very good chances to play. Before the match I thought this would be the last one.

I was sure that I would win the match and Karpov would never recover. Right now I'm not so sure," Kasparov said. Karpov gave the champion some nervous moments and Kasparov said that on Monday the advantage had been with the challenger, who built up a promising position after errors on the 18th and 19th moves. But Kasparov thought Karpov's 23rd and 25th moves had been mistakes that allowed him to change his assessment of the game. The players analysed the position in depth for about 40 minutes after the game concluded, another sign of the growing mutual respect between the old enemies.
