Now, Des isn't an attractive man, but with all the gorgeous women falling for him, he's getting ideas. For some time he has been sporting a took that was buried with Elvis a turned-up collar and sideburns. Face it, Des, you're as plain as Iiarrie Unsworth. Still, shove Des and Joe (Mark Little) together and you have something. But as Neighbours returns to our screens this week, Joe has little to laugh about He is waiting for news of an appeal in the custody case for Sky, and hassling Toby about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Here's the rub. In trying to nurture another teen star, the Neighbours producers have concentrated on the school playground and given little time to classically over-the-top characters like Harold and Madge. And Des. We'll just have to wait for Des's spin-off series. Tony Squires Subtitles, for the hearing-impaired.

MR BEAN On ABC TV at 9.40 pm AFTER four series of Btackadder, Rowan Atkinson must have relished the chance to again play a part that requires him to pull his extraordinary trademark facial contortions. As the contemptuous Edmund Blackadder, Atkinson held bis malleable visage in check while he scythed down his co-stars with Richard Curtis and Ben Elton's withering dialogue. Mr Bean (which won the 1990 Golden Rose of Montreux award for comedy) serves to demonstrate that the trio's ability to turn from one genre of comedy to another is seamless. Bean is simply light years from Bl'adder, with Atkinson reverting to his stage show persona as the unspeakable and uns peaking prat Instead of masticating over Curtis NEIGHBOURS On Seven at 7 pm LETS GET this straight You are holding in your hands a one-time avid Neighbours watcher. It is one of the few shows one can watch in comfort with children under three and its mix of corn, melodrama and astounding acting is intoxicating.

Early this year, things began to go awry, and this viewer's visits to Ramsay Street became irregular like failing to look up former dose friends while passing through the home town. Neighbours, and most viewers, lived through the limb-like loss of Jason and Kylie. When Craig McLachlan took his tan to Summer Bay, potholes began to develop in the street. And Annie Jones's disappearance was basically an invitation to watch Tony Barber bouncing off the Sale of the Century walls. SUBJECT TO LATE ALTERATIONS.

Jamie 8am Pete and Elton's marvellously insulting lines (though it must be said even these sometimes wore thin and were saved mainly by Atkinson's forceful use of themX here he has only his insidious physical presence to rely on. He plays Bean as the graceless, gawking loser with visual japes and contortions enough to put Buster Keaton et al in the shade.

He extracts a mine of material from seemingly innocuous situations visiting a church and trying to surreptitiously scoff a lolly and laboriously attempting to change into his swimming costume without removing his trousers. The collection is unified at the beginning of each sketch by the appearance of a three-wheeler car, which is either forced off the road or shoved out of its parking spot by Mr Bean's red Mini Excruciating, embarrassing and exhausting viewing.
