Arlarmon 2064 He will relinquish his position as Australian Schoolboys' coach at the end of the year to concentrate on lifting the Highlanders above the mid-table position they have occupied for some years. Gordon also announced on Tuesday that David Ashcroft, who has vast playing experience in Australia and Britain, would be the club's new coaching director and Bruce Malouf, a veteran hooker of many premiership triumphs with Randwick over the past 15 years, would be a consultant on the Highlanders' forward play. Manly and Eastwood, are expected to announce within a week the reappointment of their first grade coaches, Barry Taylor and Geoff Johnson, for next winter. Gordon Rugby Union club believes it has scored a winner with the surprise appointment of Australian Schoolboys' coach Chris Hawkins as its first-grade mentor for 1991. After months of speculation, Hawkins, who has done outstanding work with the national youth side over the past four years, was announced on Tuesday as the successor to Alec Evans.

Before that he had been in charge of the NSW Schoolboys' team for six years. Hawkins, 45, who lives at Frenchs Forest, played first-grade football at Sydney Boys' High and then in the country. He has not coached at grade level before but has had a long and fruitful association with the great Rugby school, Shore, where he teaches. The nearest the northside has come so far is with the North Sydney and Manly-Warrin-gah Rugby League clubs, which field Winfield Cup teams but the competition extends only from Canberra to Brisbane.

Now with the establishment of the Sydney Wave Baseball Club on the lower North Shore, there will be more to cheer about from this side of the harbour. The club is a member of the Australian Baseball League (ABL) which has teams in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It was formed this year after the collapse through financial problems of the Sydney Metros. In their maiden season, the Metros played at the Sydney Football Stadium, but the Wave will use Parramatta Stadium as a temporary home this summer. Wave administrators believe they have found an ideal home arena at Flat Rock Reserve, Willoughby.

The club has talked to the officials of Flat Rock's two current baseball tenants, North Shore and Willoughby clubs, and with individuals from Willoughby Council, about its proposal to preen the ground to major league standard. Baseball bigwigs want to built a stadium with seating for up to 15,000 spectators. Three companies have expressed interest in IFIEIEJE STREAKS or COLOUR SHORT HAIR to eastern and southern suburbs people. "As well, it would make us close to the business hub of North Sydney and make attracting sponsors easier, not to mention its proximity to Channel Nine which, we believe, will be televising the ABL in the near future. "Developing Flat Rock would also be beneficial to the netballers and soccer people who also use it, because their facilities would be improved by us, so it would make three sporting groups happy." To further its commitment to developing northside baseball, the Wave has organised junior coaching clinics throughout the area in the school holidays.

The Wave's marketing man, part-owner and coach Tad Powers, said: "I'd like to be on the North Shore by next season but I don't know if we can make it happen that soon. We may have to play another season at Parramatta and be ready for the North Shore in 1992." Powers is sure Flat Rock is the perfect home for his club. "It's in the middle of a thriving baseball area," he said, "and being just off the Harbour Bridge freeway makes it accessible Enjoy a stunning new colour for summer by our professional Colour consultants.

It has rejected the proposal to develop the Rosenthal Avenue site in collaboration with an entrepreneur and is now wondering where it goes from here. A proposal to raise the rates an additional 3.6 per cent gained support at the last council meeting and a deputation is to wait on the minister to request permission to do so. This proposal has two obvious disadvantages: (a) it will be necessary to raise the rates for the next 10 years to pay for refurbishing the building; (b) the council has no proposal before it and does not know whether the sum suggested ($1,600,000) will be sufficient.

I suggest that it is about time other groups in the community made their opinions heard. ALDERMAN MAUREEN ACKERMAN, Lane Cove Municipal Council. Catch-22 of politics SIR: You would norpaally be pleased when your elected representative is promoted to a ministry or shadow ministry because you would immediately think that this would put him or her in a position of increased influence and therefore better able to represent you in Parliament Alas, this is not the case, for once they are in such a high position "cabinet solidarity" requires them to toe the party line. John Howard was reduced to quoting "national interest" (The Northern Herald. November 15), as his reason for not representing the concerns of thousands of his constituents regarding aircraft noise.

The irony is that if he was serious about representing these constituents he would have to give up his postion of power in the party, and thereby become less effective. Catch-22, I think. R. CUBBY HOUSES The cost will be high SIR: The Lane Cove Municipal Council Chambers no longer provide adequate accommodation for the staff and have been criticised in evaluations from the standpoint of occupational health and safety.

The unsuitability has been obvious for several years. The previous council shelved the issue because there was no prospect of achieving unanimity among the aldermen.
