July 1988: Namaliu wins office in a vote of no-confidence against Wingti. November 1988: First attack on the Bougainville copper mine. February 1989: Defence Force pay riot, soldiers march on Parliament. June 1989: State of emergency declared in Bougainville. July 1989: Riots erupt in Enga province after Communications Minister Malipu Balakau is gunned down outside his home.

January 1990: Closure of the Bougainville copper mine. Major structural readjustment announced. Kina devalued by 10 per cent. March 1990: PNG security forces quit Bougainville. May 1990: Bougainville makes a unilateral declaration of independence, and sets up an interim government.

Port Moresby immediately blockades the island. February 1991: Namaliu introduces curfews and roadblocks in all main cities. April 1991: Colonel Leo Nuia leads 300 soldiers in an unauthorised raid on north Bougainville. THE TESTING TIMES OF RABBIE NAMALIU July 1991: Universities in Lae and Port Moresby closed down after weeks of student demonstrations. August 1991: Introduction of death penalty for murder and aggravated rape.

October 1991: Leadership Tribunal finds Deputy Prime Minister Ted Diro guilty of 81 charges of corruption and misconduct in office. GovernorGeneral forced to resign after he refuses to implement tribunal recommendations that Diro be dismissed and barred from office for three years. Diro later resigns. November 1991: Important constitutional and electoral reforms passed by Parliament. January 1992: CRA-operated Mt Kare gold mine closed after a gang of armed men set fire to the mine site.

March 1992: National Court judge recommends investigation into the Prime Minister's use of his discretionary fund. May 1992: PNG troops land on south Bougainville. Namaliu predicts that the island will be under government control by the end of the year.
