Apache Greyhound Park Apache Trail in Apache Junction Pinklon Thomas (left) misses with a left during the first round of his loss to Trevor Berbick in a WBC heavyweight title fight at Las Vegas. Berbick beats Thomas for WBC championship Qawi keeps WBA title Associated Press RENO, Nev. Dwight Muhammad Qawi stalked and taunted Leon Spinks on Saturday, repeatedly tying him up against the ropes before stopping him in the sixth round and keeping the WBA cruiserweight championship. Qawi (26-2-1 15 knockouts) frequently grinned and exposed his chin to Spinks' punches, then answered with a flurry that kept Spinks pinned in a corner or on the ropes.

Referee Mills Lane stopped the bout with four seconds left in the sixth round of the scheduled 15-roundcr while Qawi was pum-meling an almost defen.seless Spinks. Spinks said he felt Lane stopped the fight at the right time. "Every time a fighter goes into the ring, he has a strategy. Mine didn't work for me," Spinks said. a series of at least seven heavyweight title bouts that will be held under an agreement between HBO and promoters Don King and Butch 1ewis.

Their purpose is to crown a single champion next year. Holmes will challenge for the 1BF title in a rematch with Michael Spinks on April IE). "1 want to see one champion," Thomas said after the loss, which at least temporarily knocked him out of a chance to become that champion. There were no knockdowns, but Berbick was marked about both eyes and Thomas was cut in the corner of his left eye. Thomas almost went down in the 11th round when he was put back on his heels by a left hook to the head.

The 31 -year-old Berbick followed with several hard shots to the head, but Thomas fought back and pulled out of trouble. The loss for Thomas came in the second defense of the title he won on a 12-round decision over Tim Withcrspoon here Aug. 31, 1981. His record now is 26-1-1 with 21 knockouts. In another title bout on the card, Carlos "Sugar" DeLeon of Puerto Rico became the WBC cruiserweight champion for the third time wth a 12-round majority decision over Bernard Benton.

DeLeon, who weighed 185 pounds, now is 40-2-1 with 26 knockouts. Benton, 1S5 of Toledo, Ohio, is 18--1-1 with nine knockouts. Associated Press LAS VEGAS, Nev. Trevor Berbick accomplished what the oddsmakcrs said he couldn't do Saturday night, becoming the WBC heavyweight champion almost five years after he had failed to win that title from Larry Holmes. Looking like anything but a G'i-to-l underdog, Berbick went into the trenches with previously unbeaten Pinklon Thomas and won a unanimous 12-round decision.

"1 was very tempted to bet $25,000 on myself." Berbick said. "But I couldn't because 1 am a soldier of the cross. "I wanted to play with him for the first couple of rounds. 1 wanted to keep my reserve until it was time to let it loose." Berbick began letting it loose in the fifth round when the two went at it toe-to-toe, and took control of the fight over the last six rounds. bulges Paul Smith and Spider Bynutn each scored the fight 115-113 for Berbick, a native of lamaica who lives in Miami.

Judge Art I.urie favored the new champion, 1 15- 1 1. Thomas said he could accept the decision, but "as a fighter, I cannot accept the loss." "1 worked hard," Thomas said. "I trained hard for this fight, and 1 came out to do my job." But. from the fifth round on, the quick, strong Berbick dictated the fight. He used his strength and quickness to outpunch and outmusclc Thomas, who never landed a clean shot with the vaunted right hand with which lie knocked out Dm 8iiiWliiiift'ii AMERICA'S FAVORITE SPORTS CAR Mike Weaver in the eighth round of his title defense in Las Vegas last June 15.

It is not a lease, because the Outlaws can use the stadium only at specific times for specific periods, ASU officials have said. "I would hope to resolve it within a week," said Duane Schultz, ASU's legal counsel. R.A. Hillhouse, a Phoenix attorney, is reviewing the stadium license "for clarity, consistency and to be sure there is a lack of ambiguity," Schultz said. Nelson said, "I'm fully authorized to sign the agreement, and I will do so." Regent Donald Shropshire of Tucson cast the lone dissenting vote on Nelson's authorization to sign.

Shropshire said he thinks pro football on the campus "is a detriment" for several reasons. He said, among other things, that the situation was a disruption to campus life. "I think it has detracted from more important educational issues," he said of the board's time. "I'm not quarreling on the provisions of the contract, although I'm still not impressed with the monetary reward Under provisions of the contract, ASU season-ticket holders have first priority to buy Outlaws season tickets. The team's own season-ticket holders receive second priority.

Both groups must commit by April 25. The Outlaws are hoping to become the Valley's entry in the NKL through a merger of the two leagues. By WALT JAYROE Arizona Republic Stall TUCSON The state Board of Regents on Saturday afternoon authorized ASH president J. Russell Nelson to sign a contract with the Arizona Outlaws of the USFL for a license to use Sun Devil Stadium for the next 30 years. The approval appeared to be a mere formality, because the board gave tentative approval to the contract more than a week ago and gave the team the go-ahead to sell season tickets for this fall's schedule.

The Outlaws' ticket campaign officially began last Monday. ASU mailed the stadium contract to the Outlaws last Monday, and Bill Tatham the team's president and general manager, signed it and returned it Wednesday, said a source close to the situation. "The main thing is, it's done, done again, that's the nice thing," Tatham said from his Phoenix home. He has been negotiating with ASU since last fall and prematurely has thought that the deal was completed on several occasions. "I think what happened (Saturday) was that the board took action on and approved the last couple of items," he said.

"So we're off to the races. I think we're going to sell 40- to 50,000 tickets. I've been overly optimistic before never on tickets." only remaining question apparently is when Nelson will sign 1986 CAMARO rc I Tinted glass, air conditioning, V-6 5 speed transmission, tilt steering wheel, heavy duty battery, cooling more! 9.9 Available plus tax lie Join The Best Executive Golf Course At The Best Price BROWN a BROWN CHEVROLET I 145 E.
