The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday, April 23', 1992 47 Spobt old Blues give Unlucky Bart loses out in Oaks battle holders a scare, HOCKEY RACING HEATHER SMITH MAX PRESNELL NSW did well to hold reigning champions Western Australia to a 2-2 draw on the first day of the Australian women's hockey championships at the State Hockey Centre in Melbourne yesterday. Western Australia, who have won the last seven national titles, went into the game as hot favourites but ran into some tight marking and determined NSW play. The West Australians, led by national captain Sharon Buchanan, hit NSW hard early in the game, scoring from a penalty corner in the opening minutes, but the Blues hit their straps late in the first half and dominated the match from then. Buchanan left the field after suffering a gash on the chin 15 minutes into the second half but NSW coach Judy Laing said at that stage her team was well on top. 44 We were on top for 90 per cent of the second half," Laing said.

"Both teams had opportunities which they didn't convert but it was a fair result given the flow of the game. "rightful He alleged rival Mick Dittman, on Regal Sea, chopped him off. Dittman admitted his mount and Richfield Lady "had a little bumping duel" which is like getting into a clinch with Mike Tyson and calling it a slow waltz. Richfield Lady survived this but Staring came out "under her according to Beadman, and she became unbalanced. Beadman insisted the interference cost him more ground than he was beaten by.

The stewards felt Dittman's mount was not entirely responsible for the initial interference, as there was movement inside Richfield Lady, but found in favour of Beadman in the Staring clash. Richfield Lady will now be sent for a spell and set for the Melbourne Cup next November. My Brilliant Star is more of a Caulfield Cup horse, according to Melbourne-based jockey Peter Hutchinson. The Melbourne filly gave Hutchinson his first Sydney winner, and he has now achieved what his father, Ron, failed to do win an AJC Oaks. The renowned Bart Cummings timing was again spot-on, but his black streak continued with Richfield "Lady in the $450,000 AJC Oaks at Randwick yesterday.

Richfield Lady, the 6-4 favourite, finished fifth after a stormy passage in the straight, and jockey Darren Beadman protested against two other runners. AJC stewards upheld Bead-man's objection against Staring, 7- 1, fourth, but turned down the jockey's plea over the third horse, Regal Sea, 25-1. The event was won by Melbourne filly My Brilliant Star, an 8- 1 chance, who beat Swiss Cotton, 20-4, by 2'j lengths, with Regal Sea a head away third. Veteran racing followers cannot recall Victorian horses playing such a major role in a Sydney autumn carnival, with My Brilliant Star joining Naturalism CAJC Derby and Rosehill Guineas), Soho Square (Doncaster), Acushla Marie (Winfield) and Schillaci (Galaxy) in the Group One list. In a slowly-run Oaks, Richfield Lady had a troubled course from Homeward bound My Brilliant Star, centre, storms home in the AJC Oaks.

Distressed Cassidy looks to Sydney Cup "Our first three matches in this tournament are hard ones and if we can come away with five points I'll be very pleased. This one point from the draw could, prove very valuable later on." Buchanan was taken to hospital for stitches but is expected to play in WA's match with Victoria today. NSW now meet South Australia, who lost 3-2 to Victoria yesterday. In other results. Queensland defeated the ACT 5-1 and Tasmania walloped Northern Territorv 6-0.

In Perth, Western Australia began the defence of their men's national hockey title at the Commonwealth Stadium with a resounding 5-2 win over South Australia. Meanwhile, goals from Darren Bannerman and Mark Rix gave NSW a 2-0 win in their opening game of the tournament against Tasmania. near the tail of the field to go through the ruck and miss out by only 2.9 lengths. Richfield Lady has been giving Cummings problems this preparation, yet the master trainer had her primed for the Oaks, and her defeat is another example of his Sydney autumn of discontent Melbourne Cup winner Let's Elope went amiss, while runner-up Shiva's Revenge had to be destroyed at Randwick after a track accident. And classy two-year-old Riva Diva was spelled after being sore.

Cummings was philosophical about Richfield Lady's loss. "She was knocked from pillar to post but them's the breaks," he said after the race. But Beadman could not get into the stewards' room quick enough. Early in the straight he went to the outside of all but Regal Sea, for what the jockey said was his after he combined with the galloper to win last Saturday's Chairman's Handicap at Randwick. The winner of the Rex White, former Queensland filly Kinkam, will be sent back north after her success for new trainer Sterling Smith.

He said Kinkam had been nominated for "all the major two-year-old events in and will go north immediately. MARTIN TALTY Top jockey Jim Cassidy is adamant he will be fit to ride favourite Demerit in Saturday's $500,000 Sydney Cup, at Randwick despite forfeiting his engagements yesterday after wasting. Cassidy was noticeably distressed after riding Rose Of Rory in the Rex White Handicap, and stood down for the remainder of the day at Randwick after telling stewards of his difficulty in handling the horse. "I probably shouldn't have ridden today after wasting in previous weeks to ride at 51kg," Cassidy said. "For the past two weeks I've been riding at 51kg, and this third meeting has just topped it off." Cassidy said he had retched after his ride on Rose Of Rory and would take things easy over the next few days in the lead-up to the Sydney Cup.

He had already declared he would ride Demerit a kilo overweight at 50kg in the Cup SPORT SUMMARY GOLF Scottish Premier division-. Air-drieomans 1 St Mirren 1.
