Mind you, by now most of us have discovered enough about this ex-prom queen to wish we had knocked her on the head ourselves.

This is the series that produced such hysteria in America that Bloom-ingdales set up a special Twin Peaks department, pushing pleated plaid skirts and lumberjack fashions. While it hasn't reached that level here, there are still enough TP fans to push up the sales of cherry pie. Tonight's episode is special David Lynch returns as director. With his guidance, this tale of bizarre happenings in a north-west logging town recaptures some of its sense of horror. All the loose threads that were leading nowhere are tidied away, Programs supplied by TV channels.

encompasses most of the cast, including Reynolds's two wives, his two sons and his in-laws, the close-knit Taylors. So far, in the two-hour bumper episodes we schlock-heads are revelling in, there have been flashbacks indicating any one of them could have done the deed. Two weeks ago the most obvious choice was Barb, who was being blackmailed for $50,000 (small fries, her family won the lottery). Last week it was Jack, who knows Eddie knows about his love child. Now Chris has confessed he did it, which is a nonsense as he was at work.

This is probably the darkest episode of Chances you'll see, with this once-happy Taylor clan being blasted apart by the death and the rumours of who's responsible. I shan't be a smart Alex and spoil the fun, but discovery of who did the slashing isn't a great surprise. Peter Holmes CHANCES On Nine at 8.30 pm IN AUSTRALIA, the punch line of Twin Peaks was known way before the joke started there wasn't going to be a killer at all. Viewers would bend their brains trying to solve the mystery when there wasn't one. Good gag.

But along came the US ABC network, insisting that Lynch choose a killer, and the joke was over especially when we find tonight that the donut did it, with the log an accessary after the fact. Over at Nine, the Who Killed Eddie Reynolds? episode of Chances is far more enticing. Reynolds, portrayed with just enough niggle by Denis Miller, was stabbed below the heart a fortnight ago after making a career out of bigamy, lying and blackmail. Lynch also brings back those strange images that fans have elevated into sacred icons the face of Killer Bob, the log lady's log and that ceiling fan that spins perpetually in the Palmer household. Some viewers have become alienated by the increasingly weird, dream logic of writers Lynch and Mark Frost. for one, find it refreshing, and as long as Kyle MacLachlan, that very Special Agent, is on the trail, I raise my cup of "joe" (coffee, for the uninitiated) in salute.
