a REPUBLIC ATM Sighting of comet reported brightness less than expected Associated Press LOS ANGELES Astronomers have sighted Halley's comet again, three months after it disappeared behind the sun, and it isn't as bright as expected, scientists said Tuesday. "It has been picked up following its conjunction with the sun," said astronomer Daniel Green of the Smithsonian Astronomical Observatory's Minor Planet Center. "We've got photographs from two and one amateur (astronomer) we can verify." The comet "was a little fainter than we anticipated," Green said in Cambridge, Mass. But because it is more closely observed on its current trip through our solar system than during its last voyage, in 1910-11, scientists aren't sure if it is unusually dim, he said. The comet, basically a dirty snowball of dust and ice that orbits the sun every 74 to 79 years, first was observed on its current journey in October 1982.

It vanished behind the sun in mid-April and was observed again in July by two professional astronomers, Green said. An amateur astronomer spotted it Thursday and again Sunday, he said. People should be able to see it with the naked eye in December, he said. U.S. calls off effort to deport Nicaraguan who assailed CIA New York Times WASHINGTON The Immigration and Naturalization Service has halted deportation proceedings against a Nicaraguan exile who was dismissed from the largest antiSandinista rebel force for criticizing the CIA.

In a letter sent to exile Edgar Chamorro at his home in Key Biscayne, last week, the Miami, office of the INS said that its letter of June 26 advising him that "exclusion proceedings" had begun should be disregarded. Perry Rivkind, the INS district director, said Tuesday that he had learned that Chamorro has a valid visa and a preferential claim to permanent U.S. residence because his sister is a citizen. The June 26 letter, sent in Rivkind's name, was written a few days after Chamorro wrote opinion articles for the New York Times and the Miami Herald in which he argued against expansion of the war State pot sweep over; 122 held in U.S. raids Although nationwide raids on tinue today in other parts of the marijuana fields are to continue country, raids in Arizona had today in what has been billed as ended for the time being.

Firing of policeman for associating with bikers is affirmed Wednesday, August 7, 1985 in Nicaragua and said the UnitedStates should focus on aiding moderate opposition leaders rather than on running "proxy armies." Rivkind acknowledged that it was the articles that drew his attention to Chamorro but said he was not motivated by politics. He said the Herald article included the information that Chamorro's work permit had been revoked. This is normally done after a request for asylum has been denied, he said, so he began to check Chamorro's INS file and found that asylum had been denied six months earlier.

Rivkind said he knew when he sent the June letter that it was a "politically sensitive" issue. "Someone in the office said, why didn't I just put it away and forget it," he said, "but it was a violation of the law. It would have been the cowardly thing to do." After that letter was sent, he said, a lawyer for Chamorro came forward with the information that tion follows a July 16 hearing and a review of the hearing transcript. During the hearing, Huggins testified that he is not friends with Dirty Dozen gang members and has done nothing illegal or unethical. Huggins, an 18-year veteran of the department, said he did not attend Tuesday's meeting because he was unaware it was being conducted.

He was placed in charge of public relations for the rebel group. Chamorro, however, said he had strong differences with the CIA over preparation of a psychological warfare manual that he said recommended hiring professional criminals and advocated killing some opponents of the Sandinista regime in order to create martyrs. After the manual became public late in 1984, Chamorro answered questions from journalists about it and subsequently was dismissed from his position.
