A2 THE TAO6 NEWS Thursday, Nov. 17. 1004 Veterans flock to Angel Fire By Rick Romanclto The Taos News ANOEL FIRE Some veterans came with friends or members of their families. Others showed up alone, wearing the insignia of their service. 6ut all stood together, hands over hearts, in an unashamed display of patriotism to remember those who put their lives on the line for their country during ceremonies to mark Veteran's Day, Friday (Nov.

11), at the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Vietnam Veterans National Memorial in Angel Fire. "We are a grateful country and we appreciate your sacrifices," Luis Gonzales of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) told the gathering. "I salute all of you." Dr. Victor Westphall, founder and director emeritus of the memorial said, "War is only the product of our minds and our wills, and it is only by using our minds and our wills that we can prevent it." Although most remarks by speakers and performers contained expressions of respect and love for their country, some apparently were not happy about the state of relations with individual lawmakers and an increasingly complicated bureaucracy. Much of that sentiment surfaced during remarks by keynote speaker Gregory Reed, national DAV First Jr.

Vice Commander and a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran. "We need as much understanding as we can get in our capitol," Reed said, "because there are a couple of major issues on our hands." First, he said, veterans must be vigilant so the Veteran's Administration (VA) medical system "doesn't get lost in the national health care reform shuffle." Second, he said, something must be done to prevent Members of the DAV color guard from Santa Fe are shown retiring the colors. "these appalling delays in VA claims processing. That a veteran may have to wait four or possibly five years to see a claim move all the way' through the system is in- tolerable, totally unacceptable and just plainly unfair." These, he said, are the issues of "simple justice." "We must march forward with our strength and determination, convinced of the moral Tightness of our cause," he said. "The time has come for all of us to say, 'We're mad as hell and we're not going to take The time has come for our elected officials in Washington to understand that caring for America's veterans is a legitimate, continuing cost of war.

The time has come for a little common sense to prevail." Among other speakers during the hour-long presentation were Albert H. Linden, treasurer for the memorial's board of directors; Rev. Dan Masters of the Angel Fire Baptist Church; and Spencer Ralston, assistant director of the VA medical center in Albuquerque. Singers who performed were Shareen Torres of Taps; Linda N. Vaughn, an administrative assisant at the DAV memorial; and Krista Masters of Angel Fire.

Residents report odd lights If you happened to be outside at night last September and saw a strange glowing object moving across the sky, you were not alone. People from New Mexico to Alaska have reported seeing a large number of unidentified flying objects, enough to be called a major "flap by officials of the UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, Washington. Incidents were reported above Amor Lane near Taos High School and at other areas in Taos in September, according to a story in the Monday (Nov. 14) issue of The Santa Fe New Mexican. During one six-week period this fall, the UFO center's director Peter Davenport said, his office logged more than 500 telephone calls of reported sightings.

Maida Martinez, her husband Toby, and Eric Tafoya of Taos all reported seeing an object described as a "bright white light, accompanied by about a dozen smaller lights" flying low over populated areas ofTaos. Air Force bases in New Mexico and the Federal Aviation Administration in Albuquerque declined to comment on the sightings. Northern New Mexico and southern Colorado have been the center of dozens of UFO sightings since the late 1960s, some apparently linked to reports of cattle mutilations.
