Memorial cotributions may be made to Sunshine Services, 9980 Santa Fe Drive, Sun City, James Groppi James Groppi; former priest, rights protester Associated Press MILWAUKEE James Groppi, an ex-priest and civil rights activist who gained national attention in the 1960s, died Monday at age 54. Groppi died "peacefully and comfortably" at home with his family. He had been partially paralyzed and confined to wheel, chair since a tumor was removed from his brain in In 1967 and 1968, Groppi; then a Roman Catholic priest in charge of. St. Boniface church in Milwaukee's inner city, led 200 consecutive daily marches to urge a city open-housing law, finally passed in April 1968.

Later, Groppi attended Antioch Law School in Washington, driving a cab to pay his tuition. In January 1975, he joined actor Brando as a peacemaker between authorities and armed Indian activists at a vacant Wisconsin monastery. Groppi, who often clashed with church superiors, was excommunicated in April 1976, when he married former nun Margaret Rozga. They had two daughters and son. Groppi then studied for priesthood in the Episcopal Church, but, when offered a job by an Episcopal bishop in Detroit, he declined leave Milwaukee.

He became a bus driver for the Milwaukee County Transit system and, in 1983, was elected president of their union. On June 9, more than 600 well -wishers attended a dinner in his honor. From his wheelchair, Groppi led the audience in singing Oh, Freedom. Funeral arrangements were pending. Willie R.
