and daughter William and Sharon Wright Salt Lake City Despite rising food costs and decreased cash appropriations from the federal government the 48647 Utah school children participating in the state school lunch program still are able to purchase hot meals with milk for 15c This is made possible by three contributions---3550000 from a 4 tax on liquor sales $297000 from the federal governmeut In cash and approximately $350000 worth of surplus food commodities donated by the Department of 'Agriculture Ogden Abstain A negative factor which results in decreased cost to rural students Is the absence from the program of the state's two largest school Lake City and Ogden The nonparticipating schools are caught in a paradox Setting aside questions of merit or nonmerit of a state-subsidized feeding program cold figures rule out active participation by the states most populous school districts Although Salt Lake and Ogden school children are treading the nutritional water as far as school lunches are concerned if they attempt to board the lunch program raft it might sink with all hands aboard Of the $550000 to be furnished by the state Salt Lake City and Ogden liquor purchasers will furnish over $280000 Would Overburden Fund But if salt Lake and Ogden pupils begin to participate in the program the school lunch fund unless enlarged through increased state or federal appropriations would have to be sliced so thin it would lose much of its value to the 36 distgicts now participating Park City which has no program at present intends to come in during 1948-49 school year Present cost of hot meals and milk la 28c The pupil pays 15c the state 9c and the federal government 4c according ta Rodney A Ashby state lunch fund director The 6800000 lunches to be served during the current school year places Utah fourth in the nation in the average number of pupils per school taking advantage of the subsidy 34 Participation Utah ranks sixth in percentage of students enrolled who participate in the program 'rhe Utah percentage Is 34 compared with a national average of 24 Moose in Pay Roll ath Ro ll ath Roll 77121 Chancres To Uptown Site April 12 she will pose for calendar art
