The NBC affiliate, which had tested its new stereo equipment for several hours on Wednesday, joined more than 20 stations around the nation in utilizing what many in the industry consider to be the biggest, technological leap forward since the introduction of color. Most other Valley stations are expected to initiate stereo transmissions of audio within the next year. Their timetables for installing the necessary equipment vary. "It's not just a promotional stunt It's a viable product," said Channel 12's general manager, C.E.

"Pep" Cooney. "NBC thinks it 13 going to be a big thing," Cooney said. "In a year or two there'll be an awful lot of homes that will receive it." Channel 12 hadn't planned to go stereo until next year, but Cooney reported his network heavily emphasized stereo at its annual meeting of affiliates in May. This prompted him to act faster, at an initial cost of $40,000. emanating from a conventional TV with a small speaker.

Non-commercial PBS leads the industry by offering its over-the-air stations roughly 10 hours of stereo programming a week, usually in concert form, such as symphony or opera broadcasts. PBS is expected to increase its stereo output, but KAET-TV (Channel 8), except in cases where it simulcasts programs with FM radio stations, doesn't plan to broadcast in stereo until next year. Channel 8's general manager, Bob Ellis, said the station hopes to go stereo on Jan 30, the station's 25th anniversary. The initial cost is expected to be about $85,000. "We want to do it as soon as we can," said Ellis, suggesting that PBS offers "the type of programming that really lends itself to stereo." Among the big three commercial networks, NBC is at the stereo forefront, primarily because its audience is packed with technology-conscious 18- to 49-year-olds.

ABC is studying stereo, but with an eye toward using the extra available audio channel to transmit shows in Spanish to markets with large Hispanic populations. KTVK-TV (Channel 3), the local ABC affiliate, is planning to install the necessary Cooney, noting that the stereo capability will be available for use by advertisers. "Their commercials will have much more impact," he said. However, stereo is not expected to have an immediate effect on over-the-air broadcasters, since the stations lack stereo programming and most consumers lack stereo TVs. (Several cable networks, most notably MTV and its sister service VH-1, have been broadcasting in stereo for several years.) A spokeswoman for the National ation of Broadcasters in Washington, D.C., said Thursday that an estimate of the" number of homes with stereo TVs was not available, suggesting the number may be so" 6mall as to be "negligible." Even though it lacks stereo programming, Channel 12 is airing two-channel audio that has been enhanced by processing equipment to create synthesized stereo.

A demonstration of synthesized stereo conducted for a reporter Thursay afternoon at the station, with programming piped through a Sony stereo TV, revealed the audio quality to be vastly superior to traditionalTVsound. The audio exhibited greater depth, -clarity and crispness even to a person with a tin ear than the sound stereo but has not announced a start-up date for transmission. CBS has said it doesn't consider stereo a top priority, although local affiliate -KTSP-TV (Channel 10) is also looking at buying stereo equipment On the local independent front, KPHO-TV (Channel 5) is actively gearing up for stereo and probably will beat Channel 8 in becoming the market's second-stereo station. Channel 5 General Manager Dick DeAn-pelis said the earliest his station could go stereo is November, with the cost pegged at-about $70,000. "We're looking at equipment," DeAnge-lis reported.

"I'm not sure if any of it has been ordered yet. We probably won't make a ny big deal out of (going stereo)." Cooney, likewise, downplayed the pro-' motional aspect of stereo, even though Channel 12 claimed local bragging rights by being the Valley's first stereo-active station. "The promotion will come from NBC," he said, reiterating an industry opinion that stereo "is going to go over big like cable did." More than 125 stations in the country" are expected to be broadcasting in stereo by the end of 1985, according to the trade publication Electronic Media. By the time the station finishes converting to stereo, which includes installing a stereo videotape machine and control board, the total tab will exceed $200,000, Cooney said. To date, none of NBC's shows are fed to stations in stereo.

That will change next month when the network kicks off stereo Bervice on its July 16 telecast of baseball's All-Star Game. NBC plans to begin providing The Tonight Show in stereo in July, and will follow that up with Miami Vice, Friday Night Videos, Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, movies and sports events.
