In doing so, the commission dismissed applications from six other companies who wanted to build a station in Glendale. The decision becomes effective in 50 days unless someone challenges it within 30 days. Roy Herberger, trustee for Lee Optical and dean of Southern Methodist University's School of Business, said Tuesday that if no one challenges, the new station could be on the air by midfall. John Moynihan's SportsTalk show on soon-to-be newstalk KJJJ (910 AM) will be expanded from 90 minutes to three hours, although the exact hours and the date for expansion haven't been firmed up, according to Bob Grossfeld, director of news and programming.

Most likely, SportsTalk will air from 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays. "Is SportsTalk going to be covering afternoon drive? The answer is Grossfeld said. range from $598 for a portable model up to $1,048 for a console. The low-end price is for a 19-inch Sony set with remote control, which is only $100 more than for a similar monaural set.

Garmany and Edwards predicted the price for stereo TVs will decrease as demand increases, much in the same way the price for videocassette recorders and compact disc players have come down. "I think a year from now it will come down, but not as dramatically as VCRs and CDs," Garmany said. Edwards suggested the drop will most likely come for the higher-dollar console models, possibly as much as $100. Nonetheless, consumer interest already exists for stereo TV. As Edwards said, "I'm changing my TV this week." Channel 45 update: United Television, which plans to have KUTP-TV on the air early next year, is still trying to acquire the call letters KOLT-TV for its new UHF outlet John Siegel, president of United Television's KBHK-TV in San Francisco, said Tuesday that a recent change in Federal Communications Commission rules now designation it the original noiaer oi tne can letters signs a waiver.

A small radio station in Nebraska currently uses KOLT, and United Television is seeking such a waiver from the station. Siegel sees KOLT-TV as being a natural name for the the new TV station, which could promote itself as KOLT-45. "There's no question in my mind that people would know we are there," he said. Channel 45 is expected to be programmed as a traditional independent, catering to kids during the morning and afternoon hours and playing movies at night The station has already acquired several shows, including syndicated reruns of The Tonight Show, which it will likely air at 10 p.m. weekdays opposite local news on the network affiliates.

Channel 3 put the ABC News show Nightline back in its original 10:30 p.m. time slot Tuesday and moved WKRP in Cincinnati to 11 p.m. "We decided to do it a couple of days ago because of the hostage situation (in Lebanon)," KTVK-TVstation manager I sion last week by KPNX-TV (Chan- nel 12) hasn't resulted in a stampede to electronics stores, but executives for two major retail stores report steady consumer interest and predict increased sales as more stations in the Phoenix market adopt stereo. "We're moving anywhere from 30 to 50 (stereo TV sets) a month at this store. It's going up every month," said Bud Garmany, assistant general manager for The Federated Group outlet at 3857 E.

Thomas Road. Asked if Channel 12's introduction of stereo has prompted a surge in buying, Garmany replied, "No, there hasn't been yet." Federated has carried stereo televisions since January. Dave Edwards, general manager of The Warehouse at 310 S. 29th said his store sells about 50 stereo televisions a month and has been stocking them for about a year. Edwards, who also said Channel 12's 6witch hasn't spurred viewer buying, noted that roughly 20 percent of all people buying TVs have opted for stereo in anticipation of the technology's arrival in the Valley.

KPNX-TV, an NBC affiliate, began regular telecasting of "synthesized stereo" on Thursday, and at least three other stations are expected to be stereo by early 1986. Independent KPHO-TV (Channel 5) hopes to broadcast a stereo signal in November, and PBS outlet KAET-TV (Channel 8) plans to upgrade in January. CBS affiliate KTSP-TV (Channel 10) and ABC affiliate KTVK-TV (Channel 3) have been less definitive in their plans, but independent KUTP-TV (Channel 45) will be stereo when it signs on in January. A stereo television is a still relatively high-ticket item. Garmany said his store sells monitors for $800 and more but said a stereo TV tuner, which can be attached to a stereo-ready set, can be purchased for $75 -to $150.
