AAP By JACQUELINE McARTHUR A POLICE bike patrol will lead an aggressive new campaign to combat muggers in one of the city's most dangerous areas: Hyde Park. Four specially trained police officers will pedal around the park's north and south sides on mountain bikes to try to stem the spiralling crime rate. Hyde Park, a quiet haven by day, becomes an intimidating black spot at night despite being in full view of the College Street police headquarters.

A three-year crime study on the city's most dangerous areas, to be released in two weeks, confirms the park's threatening after-dark image. City Central police commander Donald Graham said: "Healthy young police men and women on bikes should be more visible than officers on horseback. "They'll be able to whizz around the park a lot faster than a car, in some cases, and their presence should discourage the criminals."
