Program shuffling: A poor showing in the local ratings for February has prompted ABC affiliate KTVK-TV (Channel 3) to revamp its afternoon and late-night lineups next month.

Among the changes will be a later air time for Nightline from ABC News. Effective April 8, it will appear at 1 1 p.m. weekdays, preceded by WKRP in Cincinnati. Nightline finished in fourth place at 10:30 p.m. during the February ratings "sweep," according to figures from the Arbitron and A.C.

Nielsen companies. The network news entry will be followed at 11:30 p.m. by The Newlywed Game, which Channel 3 is lifting from an afternoon time slot so it can return Little House on the Prairie to the air at 3 p.m. Dropped will be $100,000 Name That Tune, which airs at 3:30 p.m. That same week, ABC also plans to make a daytime change, replacing Trivia Trap with a new game show hosted by Peter Marshall called All-Star Blitz.

The catch, according to Home, was that the network arranger said KJJJ already had agreed to carry Wildcat baseball, an unattractive sport from a ratings standpoint, and wanted KOY to do likewise. That fact, combined with low ratings garnered by UofA football on KOY last fall, prompted KOY to decline. KJJJ, however, felt it was a risk worth taking. The station will carry all UofA football and basketball games during the 1985-86 school year and most of the remaining baseball games this spring.

UofA coverage will begin with the UofAASU baseball series next week. Coverage of Arizona State University sports will continue to be heard on newstalk KTAR (620 AM) for another four years. However, local rights to University of Arizona sports will immediately shift from contemporarytalk KOY (550 AM) to country KJJJ (910 AM). ASU announced Monday its choice of a nuiltimillion dollar bid submitted by KTAR over a hefty bid by KOY to carry Sun Devil sports. KTAR has held ASU broadcast rights for the last three years.

Meanwhile, KJJJ managed to acquire the Wildcats' rights Friday after KOY, which has been the local UofA outlet for two years, passed up a new one-year deal. KTAR will provide ASU with one of the most lucrative radio arrangements in the nation: $2.1 million in cash over four years, plus a variety of other valuable considerations. The newstalk station, the most popular station in the market, will pay ASU a total of $500,000 in the first year of the contract, $520,000 in the second, $530,000 in the third and $550,000 in the fourth. Andrews isn't concerned. "I think the bid is for more than just sports. It's for a close relationship with the university," he said, suggesting that ASU and KTAR are both community-oriented institutions that-transcend sports. As for ASU's recent athletic problems, Andrews said, "Who can predict sports? Next year if the football team goes to the in the first year of the deal will exceed $1.1 million.

"To us, it's more important than to other stations because we have the sports image," said KTAR general manager Johnny Andrews, whose station is paying only $280,000 to ASU this school year! KOY's bid was for $345,000 in the first year, with annual increases thereafter, and other support as well. Andrews termed KOY's bid "very substantial." Informed of ASU's decision, KOY general manager Mike Home said, "That's no surprise." Referring to KTAR's bid, Home added, "It's not that valuable to us."
