The broadcast said Mali's forces "entirely wiped out the enemy's forces and fortified positions at Koloko," about two miles inside Burkina Faso.

Bamako Radio also said "our aircraft" destroyed military objectives at four major towns along the 680-mile border. Mali is said to have five Soviet MiG fighters. Ouagadougou Radio claimed white combatants had been seen with Mali's forces at Falamana, a major southern frontier crossing. Mali's president, Gen. Moussa Traore, has strengthened ties with France, while Capt Thomas San-kara, leader of Burkina Faso, has been outspoken against "Western imperialism" and has been promised Libyan aid.

The two nations, among the world's poorest, have both claimed the Agacher area since achieving independence from France 25 years ago. Agacher is said to contain manganese and natural-gas deposits.

Pordea was a Romanian diplomat during World War II, and he received political asylum in France in 1948. "The record shows that Pordea has already used his position to support the objectives of the Romanian regime," the Sunday Times says. Diplomats said the reports of enough place on the European list to guarantee his election.
