A6 THE TAOS NEWS Thursday. Oct 6, 1004 Local lawyer seeks deeper cattle probe A local attorney has called for an investigation into the causes of cattle mutilations, John Paternoster recommends that the mutilation sites be treated as crime scenes when the mutilations are investigated. Former head of the state attorney general's investigative division, Paternoster represents Tom Reed, a northern Taos County rancher whose livestock was the target of someone or something causing the unusual deaths. Reed manages the 3,800- acre Tres Ritos ranch north of Questa. Paternoster said he would like to see trained investigators from a variety of fields look into the causes of the phenomenon that has plagued northern 'New Mexico and southern Colorado since the 1960s. .Several hundred head of cattle in the region reportedly have.died in mysterious ways this year alone, and members of New Mexico's congressional delegation are said to be studying the matter. Eagle Nest rancher Eli Hronich, who has lost dozens of cattle to the phenomenon, recently was featured in an episode of "Sightings," a Fox television network program that postulated the mutilations may be linked to the race to find an artificial blood source by researchers in the medical, industry. A rancher from the Mora area recently said he observed a cow being dragged through a fence by an invisible beam that made a low hum. Others have claimed the mutilations are the work of animal predators, cultists, pranksters, space aliens and secret government experimenters. Only after a serious scientific study conducted by reputable experts that leads to "hard conclusive facts," Paternoster said, can anyone be expected to theorize about reasons for these cases. In a typical cattle mutilation, the animal dies of a cause not consistent with disease, attack or a natural event. The animal's eyes, ears, tongue and sexual organs often are removed with "surgical precision," leaving wounds that appear bloodless, according to reports. In brief Fernandez goes to jail Former Taos County commissioner David Fernandez reported to the Taos County Adult Detention Center Tuesday (Oct. 4)' to begin serving a 20-day sentence for intimidating a witness. According to district judge Benjamin Eastburn, Fernandez can either serve 10 days straight and receive 10 days of "good time" credit, or he can serve 20 days on alternating weekends. Fernandez said Tuesday that he was unsure which option he would choose.
