month from Dublication of this supposed vocation for five years. Shortly before taking his final vows, he changed his mind again and left the order. His curriculum vitae admits only that he taught history for two years at Sydney's harbour-side Jesuit college, St Aloysius, and that he held an unlikely post in the statistical account section of the Hardie Rubber Co. Then his life swerved back into academia and a research scholarship with the historian Manning Clark, a PhD and a history lectureship in 1959. Professor Patrick O'Farrell remembers Suttor well; both young men, as then they were, had sought that job with Manning Clark.

"I knew and liked Urn," O'Farrell recalls. "When Manning came along and explained I hadn't got the job, I congratulated Suttor's future looked bright but the partnership with Clark would end in tears. 1926-1997 For more than 30 years he lived abroad. Yet Timothy Suttor historian, philosopher and former ANU academic, who has died in Spain of cancer aged 71 still called Australia home. "A son of NSW whose recent thoughts turned often to his native land.

A grand intellect, a complex man that's how he was described in his Herald death notice. Suttor's last illness was short; he died in Estepona, in Malaga province. He had travelled a long and very winding, personal road from his rural roots; it took him a considerable distance, in every sense, from a family sufficiently distinguished in Australian rural life for a main arena stand at the old Sydney Showground to be named Suttor. Timothy Lachlan Lautour Suttor was born at Tamworth, the only child of parents whose forebears had long been settled in NSW. His student years at Armi-dale College and in Sydney were dazzling.

He went to the University of Sydney and carried off an arts degree with first-class honours in English and the coveted University Medal in English for 1946. He also established what his peers remembered as an "awesome reputation" for conversation and writing; they remember him still as a stimulating, controversial thinker. Suttor's career then took off in its several, indecisive, directions. Born and raised an Anglican, he was received into the Catholic Church at Easter 1947. The following year, having acquired his master's in English (with second-class honours), he joined the Marist Brothers in Bendigo as a lay teacher.

He didn't stay long. He determined to become a Dominican priest and stuck doggedly to that A new monthly fair being held at "Tim became unhappy with Manning and Manning with him," O'Farrell remembers. "Manning subsequently drove him out; Tim hadn't measured up to what Manning had expected. They fell out in a deep fashion and Tim went to Toronto pursuing his philosophy, rather than his history. It was a personal tragedy, but it also deprived Australia of a man whose intellectual contribution could have been very great "We continued a correspondence for some years and then things fell apart in Tim's personal life.

My impression is that he left his wife and went off with another person, obviously to Spain." During his time in Australia Suttor, who was promoted to senior lecturer at the ANU in 1964, achieved a formidable reputation as a writer for learned journals. A stream of articles on dogma, literature, education and Catholicism in Australian politics flowed from his pen. His doctoral thesis was published in 1965 Hierarchy and Democracy in Australia 1 788-1870: The Formation of Australian Catholicism by Melbourne University Press. In those overheated times, it excited both dissension and acclaim. But sadly for Australia, Suttor would never live here again.

He took a lectureship in the history of theology at the University of Toronto in the mid-1960s and later a chair in theology at Windsor, Ontario. He settled in Spain in the early 1980s, having spent two years in the south of France. Before leaving Australia, he married Patricia Ingham, with whom he had four A daughter. Felicity, died before him. He is survived by his wife, a daughter Carmel, and two sons, Greg and Edward, all of Canada.

AFTER 1 4 days from publication of NOTICE of Intended Distribution this notice an application tor probate of the Will dated 25 Decem month bombardment of the Muslim eastern side of the city. Boban was bora in 1940 in the south-western village of Sovici, in the rugged Croatian frontier country of the border between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. A year later came the Nazi invasion and Boban's region became a stronghold of the Croatian fascist Ustashi movement, racist and nationalist In Tito's Yugoslavia, Boban, with an economics degree, rose up the communist ladder as a classic party apparatchik, heading a string of state-owned department stores. The onset of Croatian secessionism in 1990 saw him advance within Tudjman's ruling party. On May 6, 1992, a month after the Bosnian war began, Boban secretly met the Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, in Graz in Austria to pore over maps and divide the Bosnian cake.

The two were mirror images, pursuing similar dreams of ethnically pure statelets and equally ruthless in implementing their plans. Boban's campaign reached its climax in 1993 when Bosnia's war-within-a-war saw the Croats turn on their nominal Muslim allies in butchery which became the backdrop to the Blaskic trial The Guardian 1940-1997 A hardline Croatian nationalist leader seen by many as a war criminal, Mate Boban has died of a stroke aged 57. He died in Mostar, a city that he did his utmost to partition. Boban was the political henchman of the Croatian president, Franjo Tudjman, who appointed him to lead the Bosnian wing of the ruling party and spearhead the campaign to carve up Bosnia along ethnic lines. Whether ensconced at Zagreb's Intercontinental Hotel or among the gangsters and hoodlums running the small towns and villages of his native western Herzegovina, Boban cut an unsavoury figure.

The long list of international mediators who wrestled with the Yugoslav conflict all spoke distastefully of him and Tudjman eventually sacked him under American pressure. He was handsomely compensated, however, with a job at the top of the Croatian national oil company INA, and continued to wield much influence behind the scenes. Boban's career was of a piece with the ruthless political villains who led Yugoslavia into the abyss, condemning its peoples to siege, ethnic cleansing and resettlement, while enriching of Estate. Miss Lawrence was hired she was 20 at the time by Fox Studios to make several films with Alice Faye and Edward Everett Horton, among others. These included Ten Dollar Raise, Your Uncle Dudley, Music Is Magic and Charlie Chan 's Secret But it was after the merger of Fox and 20th Century that she came into her own. She danced the Marilyn Miller part in The Great Ziegfeld and was cast as the new teacher, Miss Lawrence, in a series of Our Gang shorts, the best of which, Bored Estate or Frederick LnKLts EDGECOMBE late of 1 Mirreen Street. Hawks Nest in the State of Will Rogers, Disorderly Conduct (1932) with Spencer Tracy and the 1935 MGM hit Reckless with Jean Harlow.

She ended her career in 1939 and married a Brooklyn lawyer, Juvenal P. Marchisio. He became a New York judge and a leader in the postwar relief efforts for Italy. He died in 1973. She is survived by her husband, John McCabe, the movie biographer; two daughters, Rosina and Margaret, a son, Juvenal, and five grandchildren.

The New York Times of Education, won an Oscar. She starred as the movie-struck Cecilia Moore, sweet young thing from Iowa, in Pick a Star. It was another feature with Laurel and Hardy, and in it she matched wits with Patsy Kelly and Jack Haley. Her last professional appearance was in an Italian film in which she played an American in Italy, In Campagna Caduta una Stella (1939). Because of the war, it was not released in the United States until 1950 as In the Country Fell a Star.

Rosina Lawrence was born in Westboro, Ontario, and as a child moved to Hollywood, 1913-1997 Her brief but bright film career still flickers on late night TV: Rosina Lawrence, who has died in New York aged 84, appeared in the Our Gang, Little Rascals and Laurel and Hardy classics. Known offscreen as Rosina Marchisio-McCabe, she danced, sang and acted in the 1920s and 30s, appearing in vaudeville and films, from comedic shorts to musical extravaganzas like The Great Ziegfeld of 1936. She also played the heroine in Way Out West (1937), which was Laurel and Hardy's favourite of their films. In it, Miss Lawrence played Mary Roberts, a scullery where her father was a set builder. His presence assured her entree to the studios but it took an accident to set her career path when a bruised knee led to dance classes as therapy.

She danced in Los Angeles theatres during school holidays, and took acting and singing lessons as well. After vaudeville, dance clubs and some stage musicals, she landed her first cinematic dancing role in Angel of Broadway (1927). She danced in Paramount on Parade (1930), featuring Maurice Chevalier, and appeared in Connecticut Yankee (1931) with Probate of tne will dated Z6tn March 1997 of HELEN MARIE New soutn wales.
