The Sydney Morning Herald SPORT Tuesday, November 9, 1993 49 Sydney Daly is banned again and this time it's indefinite Fjjiian legend set to be the star ft Sevens to ROY MASTERS LEAGUE JOHN MACDONALD the fulfilment of the immoderate talent which has been drowned by his immoderate behaviour. Only Daly knows to what extent alcohol causes his problems and his problems are exacerbated by alcohol. His time for demonstrating he has the answers is running out. Couples in clear KAPALUA, Hawaii, Monday: Fred Couples made three birdies in four holes on the back nine to pull away from the field and score a four-stroke victory at the SUS1 million ($1.49 million) Kapalua International tournament yesterday. Couples shot a final-round three-under-par 70 in windy conditions at the Plantation Course for a 16-under 274 total worth $US 180,000 Montgomerie tops SOTOGRANDE, Spain, Monday: Briton Colin Montgomerie is the new head of European golf after taking advantage of Nick Faldo's ailing wrists to relieve the I if A world No 1 of the European title here yesterday.

Montgomerie took a giant step forward in terms of From Page 50 which defied gravity, anatomical restrictions and the textboook. It extended so far beyond parallel, the driver almost touched the ground. When Daly uncoiled, he unleashed the most awesome display of sustained long-hitting. His drives averaged over 270m, and he was a combined 14 under par on the par-five holes. Daly has averaged 263m per drive on the US tour this year, 9m clear of his nearest opponent.

The big man is not just a slugger, however. He has the finesse to match the power, and harnessed his game deftly as the US won the Dunhill World Cup at St Andrew's. It's been estimated that his participation in a US tournament guarantees an extra 30,000 spectators. His generosity, heart and ready quips have won many fans. If that's all there was, it would be enough to win him tournaments and a permanent place in golfs pantheon.

Unfortunately, the dark side has again imperilled his career and his standing just when it seemed he had gained control of his insistent demons. Daly had alcohol-related problems before his PGA success, checking into an Arkansas clinic in December 1989 after a three-day binge without food, and again in May 1990, but his personal problems really received publicity when the PGA win gained him celebrity. The first media splash came in January 1992, when his fiancee, Bettye Fulford, sued for $US1 million palimony and paternity support, saying she was four months pregnant Daly made a highly publicised and criticised exit from the Australian Masters the next month when he shot 81 in the second round and failed to sign his scorecard. He was disqualified. He was in trouble again the next month after swearing on American television, but his troubles seemed to find some resolution when Bettye agreed to marriage and gave birth to a daughter, Shynah Hale, in June.

More headlines followed before the inevitable breaking point in December. Daly was arrested on an assault charge after allegedly throwing Bettye against a wall when an argument followed another drinking bout Daly again admitted himself to a clinic and later attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings before rejoining the tour. His two suspensions this year have been interspersed with performances which have promised Montgomerie I Sydney will continue to host the Rugby League Sevens tournament after a failed push to have the competition transferred to Brisbane next year. "1 think you'll see the Sevens in Sydney from now on," tournament director Colin Love said at the launching of the 1994 Coca-Cola World Sevens yesterday. Love said it was probable the Sevens would have drawn more fans if held at the ANZ Stadium in Brisbane, and that this had been strongly considered.

But negotiations had proved difficult and NSW Premier John Fahey had strongly supported the tournament's retention in Sydney. International Board director-general Ken Arthurson said it would have been inappropriate to move the Sevens after Sydney was awarded the 2000 Olympic Games. "We don't think it would have been a very good idea to take the Sevens away from Sydney when we have just been granted the Olympics, Arthurson said. "It would have been a great shame. He described Sydney as league's "spiritual This year's Sevens was only a modest success, but the tournament's immediate future was ensured yesterday when Coca-Cola announced a two-year sponsorship deal.

Five new teams will compete in next year's competition at the Sydney Football Stadium from February 4-6. Japan and Tonga were confirmed as starters, as were composite teams from New Zealand, Great Britain and Papua New Guinea. Love said the British team was likely to be strong, but the country's Rugby Football League had said it could not compel any more than two players per English club to take part. An under-strcngth Wigan was controversially axed from the Sevens last year, and Wales withdrew. Japan's entry follows a series of recent trials by rugby union players.

US network ESPN is negotiating to take the telecast of the Sevens tournament to 27 countries, and Arthurson said he hoped rugby league would take oft in Japan. "The Sevens has already been directly responsible for setting up He is so nimble he can dance between raindrops. He can wriggle into a hole a tropical caterpillar would reject He is cat-quick, and can bounce a football off his knees, head and toes as if it were a balloon and his body a coastal breeze. Waisale Serevl, the Fijiian who is expected to dominate the Coca-Cola Sevens in February, is so legendary his myths have already passed from kava-fuelled bulla sessions into promotional videotape. Kevin Neil, Canberra's chief executive, returned at the weekend from a Sevens tournament in Suva.

"When you climb on the bus, you get a 'Welcome to Fiji tape that goes for 20 minutes," said Neil. "Ten minutes of it is about Serevi." A five-eighth or fullback, Serevi has dominated the best and fairest awards at rugby union's Hong Kong Sevens, but will switch to league and play for Fiji in Sydney at the World Sevens. Sources in Fiji insist he has signed with the Brisbane Crushers, but say nothing official can be announced because he is now being paid $70,000 to play rugby with Mitsubishi in Japan. When he recently drove Mitsubishi from being down 37-3 to defeat Toyota 47-43, the slightly-framed Serevi acquired the status of a Sumo. Mitsubishi had never previously curbed and guttered Toyota.

The best gauge of Serevi's ability is the fact that his name is the only word guaranteed to elicit a comment from Canberra's Noa Nadruku. To Nadruku, the try-scoring Raiders winger, "Good afternoon" is a speech. But Canberra players joke that any mention of the possibility Serevi is a superior player will draw a torrent of torrid talk from Nodruku. Noa wants to be chief of the rugby league ark out of Fiji, and resents any celebrity passengers. It is understood Serevi will travel to Brisbane after the World Sevens and play with the Crushers in the domestic competition next year, before the expansion club joins the premiership the following year.

competitions in Fiji and South Africa, and we're hoping the same will happen in Japan," he said. "I've always thought the Japanese were ideally suited to our game." The planned entries from a veterans syndicate, along with the four 9S premiership expansion teams, as well as Canada, Morocco and Italy will not go ahead next year. Arthurson said the four new teams in the premiership Perth, North Queensland, Auckland and the Brisbane Crushers were not considered, although there had been approaches. He said their premiership debuts would have been "anU-climactic" if they had made Sevens appearances a year beforehand. A veterans team containing the likes of Peter Sterling, Wally Lewis and Steve Ella was discussed, but Sterling said there would have been "too many ball-players and not enough The prize money for the Sevens has been increased from $270,000 to $300,000, and the draw will be announced on January 16.

The teams are: Balmain. Brisbane. Canberra. Canterbury. Cronulla.

Eastern Suburbs. Gold Coast. Illawarra. Manly. Newcastle.

North Sydney. Parramatta. Penrith. St George. South Sydney.

Western Suburbs. Fiji. France. Great Britain. Jaoan.

New Zealand. Paoua New Guinea. Russia. South Africa. Tonga.

United States. Western Samoa. AAP reports: A rejuvenated Penrith continued their build-up to next season by signing a record-breaking $1.5 million sponsorship yesterday. Prospect Electricity agreed to a three-year term for the Panthers largest sponsorship contract The deal follows a successful off-season recruiting campaign after Penrith's disappointing 1993 season. The Panthers have signed New Zealand and former Eastern Suburbs halfback Gary Freeman and Brisbane second-rower Trevor Gillmeister, as well as Western Suburbs utility Jason Lidden, Brisbane's Butch Fatnowna and Keiran Meyer and Parramatta centre Robbie Beckett Hot property Fijian ace Waisale Serevi is expected to join Brisbane Crushers after finishing his stint in Japan.

achievement and confidence by capturing the Volvo Masters at Valderrama to leap from fifth place to top spot in money earned on the European Tour for 1993. The win brought his earnings for the year to 613,683 Montgomerie, whose three-under-par final round of 68 gave him a one-shot decision over battling Irishman Darren Clarke, finished with a 10-under-par total of 274, a record for the event. Touch of Qatar DOHA, Qatar, Monday: Professional golfers will head to the Middle East as part of the European PGA tour in 1996 with Qatar to stage an international championship with prize money of $US1 million million). The president of the Qatar Golf Association, Tami al-Hajri, said yesterday the event would be part of the European PGA tour and would be held on the Dana course which will be completed at the end of 1994 at a cost of $US25 million ($37.20 million). But the question is: will Serevi release the ball to Nadruku and vice-versa? AAP reports from Suva: Fijian rugby league player Pio Kubuwai caught the eye of Sydney talent scouts during a seven-a-side tournament and has been offered a place with Cronulla next year.

Talent scouts from a number of Australian clubs were on hand to check out the form of local players, who are all relative newcomers to the code. Kubuwai said he has yet to decide on the Cronulla offer. The Fijian will play fullback, a position which provides him with the best opportunity to learn the 13-a-side game and utilise the space the man in the No 1 jumper is given. It will also limit his defensive duties, always a problem for converts to the code. However, Neil, who tried to sign Serevi in May, said: "He's never had to tackle." The Canberra Raiders won the Fiji Sevens, defeating the Nasauri Raiders 28-10 in the final.

Canberra defeated Cronulla 16-14 in the semi-final and Wests were eliminated in the other semi. Nadruku captained the Raiders team, which included Laurie Daley and Nadruku's younger brother. "Noa's brother is only 18 and we will look at him again in 12 months time," said Neil. "As for Serevi, he is an absolute legend. "He adds to his sensational skills by being 85 per cent accurate with his boot.

"Fiji will have a great World Sevens side because, apart from Serevi, we have agreed to release Nadruku to Fiji."
