SUBJECT TO LATE ALTERATIONS. Subtitles, for the hearing-impaired. war and the way their experiences can be blurred and stretched out of shape by historians. By speaking with families of the Hay soldiers and travelling with the 14 veterans who returned this year to France, Tuckfield goes as close to the source as possible. Images of the dreadful carnage and conditions and the recollections of the diggers makes Cenotaph a moving and intense experience.

The simple reading of a letter from a father to his two sons before they set off on their grand adventure is classic drama. Tuckfield's low-key narration is at first a little ponderous, but as his beautifully photographed images take over, it begins to gel. Flowing gently under it all is Andrew Shultz's perfectly emotive score. Cenotaph is the first of a series on Australian involvement in wars. If those that follow live up to its standard, we will have a fitting and lasting tribute.

12 Features. 6.30 -rinor that conflict with the entombment of the Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Tonight, Cenotaph pays tribute to that soldier and all others who fought on the fields of France and Belgium. It offers glory to the young men who experienced altogether too much, while stripping the notion of war of any glory whatsoever. Most important, Cenotaph is a personal story.

Tuckfield takes the viewer to Hay, the small NSW town that offered almost all its available sons and seven women to service. The 103 who didn't return left a gaping hole in the town, with no family untouched. Although Hay's last surviving serviceman from the war died during the past year, the town's memory of the conflict did not die with him. It lives with the families and in the most potent of memorials the local high school building. Tuckfield is keenly aware of the passing of this generation of diggers Kazoo SBS 402 1 main street before going to war.

Cenotaph On ABC at 8.30 pm WE ARE constantly exposed to the horrors human beings inflict on other human beings. While the world revelled in a supposed new skin of peace with the end of the Cold War, nothing has been able to hide the blisters and boils that have continued to break out. Most recently, we have been shocked and disturbed by the images of Ireland again plunging knives into its own heart But, for the most part, we view with the detachment of distance. With Cenotaph, film-maker Christopher Tuckfield has removed the years and kilometres between the viewer and the Great War, the conflict from 1914 to 1918 that makes the bloodletting since seem like mere lunacy. The Great War went way beyond lunacy.
