Simon Simon, 8 p.m. 03 Pat Hingle guest stars as a World War II bomber pilot who wants Rick and A.J. (Gerald McRaney and Jameson Parker) to help him locate the B-25 bomber he flew during the war. KTVW-TV (Channel 33) will officially undergo a change in top management Friday when Jose Cancela replaces Danny Villanueva as general manager of the Spanish International Network affiliate. Villanueva is leaving to become assistant general manager of KMEX-TV in Los Angeles after spending more than 2'2 years in Phoenix.

Cancela was hired away from SIN affiliate WLTV in Miami, and has a-background in production and sales. WLTV is a strong news station, and Villanueva said KTVW can be expected to increase its commitment to news under Cancela as revenues rise. "As we grow, as we gain support, we will add more. We have to support ourselves. We cannot draw from a station group (like the Miami station)," 6aid Villanueva.

Channel 33 hopes to introduce a half-hour newscast in Spanish at 6 p.m. weekdays early next year. "We look forward to that," Villanueva said. Such a move would place the station in direct competition with local newscasts on the English-language network affiliates. Channel 33's two-person news department currently offers three two-minute news updates during the day and a 10- to 15-minute newscast at night The station day-to-day responsibilities at the station.

"I'll be handling the nuts and bolts," he said. Channel 33, meanwhile, is currently engaged in avoter registration drive aimed at its Hispanic viewers and is generally trying to become more involved in the Hispanic community. "The one area of change that Jose is most interested in is upping the importance of our local news breaks (and increasing the commitment to public affairs)," said Villanueva, noting that the overall goal is to make KTVW-TV "a more vital source of information to our community." During Villanueva's tenure at Channel 33, the Valley'6 lone Spanish-language TV station has moved from a makeshift facility in trailers to a new studio-office complex at 3019 E. Southern which has helped give the station credibility. He explained that, unlike with Anglo stations, it normally takes five years for a Spanish station to prove it is viable.

Channel 33 will be 5 years old in September. Sunday's United States Football League playoff game between the Arizona Wranglers and Houston Gamblers will be televised live by ABC from the Astrodome at 11:30 a.m. on KTVK-TV (Channel 3). Corey McPherrin of CBS affiliate WA-GA-TV in Atlanta will provide play-by-play with Lynn Swann, who normally works alongside Keith Jackson, adding color commentary. Jim Bergamo will work the sidelines.

Tuesday marked the first day that interested parties could file applications with the Federal Communications Commission to operate a local television station on Channel 45. The commission awarded Channel 45 to Phoenix in late April after being asked to do so by United Television Inc. Don't expect to see a new TV station anytime soon, though. The licensing process may take years. Charlie Van Dyke, former morning host at newstalk KTAR (620 AM), can now be heard giving travel information on the five-watt radio station (.1610 AM) Berving Sky Harbor International Airport.

Sky Harbor spokesman Rick Martinez reports that Van Dyke, who now has a talent and consulting business, recently stopped in at the airport with some suggestions on how the service might be improved and got roped into becoming the voice of the airport airwaves. would likely more than triple the size of its news staff when the expansion takes place. "We'll never have 35 or 40 people (like the other local affiliates), but we will be able to have a couple of news crews out on the street and provide a very solid newscast," Villanueva said. The outgoing general manager informed station ownership of his intention to leave three months ago. "I stayed on and worked until they found a successor," he said, reporting that Cancela has been acquainting himself with the station for several weeks.

Villanueva's father is general manager of KMEX-TV. He explained that his father is currently involved with the Olympics and network affairs, which will enable him to assume many of the! Viewers subscribing to some smaller cable systems may find the TMC (The Movie Channel) listing to be in error. A few companies carrying TMC tap a satellite feed different from the area's dominant systems. Viewers effected by the discrepancy should subtract three hours from the listing for a correct air time.
