TRON A computer whiz (Jeff Bridges) is zapped into an electronic world and forced to fight for his life in video-style games. Gorgeous, pioneering special effects can't overcome the script's emotional vacuum and slack acting by some of Bridges' co-stars.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP Robin Williams wrestles with life in this incomplete adaptation of John Irving's novel. Lacking the book's connecting tissue, it does hit most of the high spots, invents some new ones and features a terrific supporting cast Mary Beth Hurt, Glenn Close, John Lithgow and Swoosie Kurtz. Continuing FIREFOX Clint Eastwood sneaks into Russia to steal an advanced fighter-plane prototype in this adventure combining familiar special effects and spy-movie conventions with a Cold War ambience. ON GOLDEN POND In his final, Oscar-winning performance, the late Henry Fonda played a retired professor who is buoyed by wife Katharine Hepburn as he confronts the inevitability of death. Jane Fonda co-stars as his daughter.

Adapted by Ernest Thompson from his play and directed by Mark Rydell, it's pretty gooey. THE PIRATE MOVIE Based on Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance but lacking the score it's reserved for the movie of the same name, due next year the new musical stars Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins. It's dumb. POLTERGEIST Steven (Jaws) Spielberg is behind most of this story about a suburban family's terrorization by ghosts. Director Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) adds some shocks.

They deliver ferocious scares and spiffy special effects, but the story line is a haunting muddle. Its graphic Movies, Ell hoods and menacing record pirates in this visually stunning new-wave thriller from France. Director Jean-Jacques Beineix's first feature-length film is the best movie in town at the moment. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL Director Steven Spielberg brings the children's fable into the Space Age with this gentle intergalactic fantasy about a stranded space alien's friendship with a 10-year-old boy.

Occasionally sad but never maudlin or unduly scary, it's very much in the old Walt Disney tradition. A must. FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH Director Amy Heckerling's first film looks at contemporary adolescence from the kids' point of view. Though the comic approach sometimes stretches thin, it's the best of its kind in years. Strong cast, especially Sean Penn (Taps) as Ridgemont's resident space cadet.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 What could be more brutally stupid that Friday the 13th and its sequel? You guessed it. All that gore and it's in 3-D, too. Abysmal. MONTY PYTHON LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL The English comedy team dusts off highlights from its TV series, including sketches, film shorts, music and animation, and offers some new material in this filmed concert. NIGHT SHIFT Director Ron Howard manages half a funny movie, which is not much better than none, about schemers who turn the New York City morgue into a bordello.

Henry Winkler has nowhere to go as the milquetoast of the pair, while Michael Keaton's wild comedy wears fast. What would a real, strung-out streetwalker think of these high jinks? AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN Richard Gere and Debra Winger all but melt the stock this movie is printed on in the summer's hottest romance. He's an officer candidate with a chip on his shoulder and a yen for respect; she's the smalltown girl desperate to see the world. Together they're dynamite. So is drill instructor Louis Gossett Jr.

ROCKY III Sylvester Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa, superstar, once again showing America how to get off its duff. This time a huge wrestler and a particularly nasty rival challenge his determination. An unexpected alliance and a leavening of humor keep it from seeming totally old hat. Talia Shire, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith and Carl Weathers return as co-stars. At first mind-boggling, it soon makes great sense. Reopening, and still a best bet. THE SOLDIER Ken Wahl stars in a paramilitary fantasy directed by James Glicken-haus.

TIMERIDER A motorcycle racer and his machine are catapulted back in time in this adventure fantasy. Belinda Bauer and Peter Coyote star. Current ANNIE This season's megabudget movie is sweetened with exotic locales and costuming, but producer Ray Stark left out the Broadway musical's heart. Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Ann Reinking and Aileen Quinn star. Family fare, despite the injection of a few curses.

THE BEASTMASTER Marc Singer talks to the animals as the hero of this mythic adventure. Tanya Roberts and Rip Torn co-star. THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS -Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds are the attractions here; any submergence in their characters, a brothel-keeper and her protective lawman-lover, is strictly accidental. Dom DeLuise drops his simpering manner as the persnickity TV reporter out to close Dolly down, but the movie's finest moment comes from Charles Durning as a fancy-stepping politico. A bit naughty, but basically fun.

DAS BOOT World War II submarine warfare from the German perspective.
