The acquisition began in April 1981 when the company bought half of former actor Gene Autry's minority interest in the CBS affiliate. "It was approved," K00L-TV President Tom Chauncey said Tuesday, referring to the sale of his majority interest in the station. Broadcasting magazine has reported that Chauncey (and minority stockholdergeneral manager Homer Lane) will receive $48 million, while retaining K00L-FM radio as well as real-estate and Arabian horse interests. The actual transfer of ownership cannot occur until 30 days after FCC approval, which reportedly was given Aug. 25.

The actual changeover is expected in late September or early October. "It's a matter of setting up a time," Chauncey said. At that time, Channel 10 will take on the call letters KTSP-TV, which incoming ownership has said will stand for Tempe-Scottsdale-Phoenix. The designation coincides with another Gulf United property, WTSP-TV in Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla.

Gulf United has apparently selected a person to replacing outgoing general manager Lane, although the person's identity has not been released. Alan Henry, president of Gulf United's broadcast division, could not be reached for comment at his Tampa, office Tuesday afternoon. He was reportedly on his way to visit a Gulf United television station in High Point, N.C. A spokeswoman in his office said Henry is expected to fly to corporate headquarters in Dallas on Thursday afternoon with the incoming general manager to meet with the company's top brass. The spokeswoman said she was "not at liberty" to divulge the new general manager's name, but added that Henry may make an announcement soon.

Henry is expected to visit Phoenix on Tuesday. NO 24-HOUR OPERATION Plans to turn KPNX-TV (Channel 12) into a round-the-clock operation have been placed on the back burner, at least for this fall. "It appears we will probably not do that this year," programmer Bob Allingham said Tuesday, citing budgetary considerations as the reason behind the decision. The NBC affiliate does plan to add a half-hour of Ted Turner's CNN Headline Service, formerly known as Cable News Network-2, between 2 and 2:30 a.m. 7:30 LiKas, Yogo Q) Praise (2 hrs and poMcat roots of AW probtaint faced by pubic kovting today inchidmg owrcrowding, poor mints nance and crime and presentation of inmmieiw architectural and rrKinageieenl ideas that could reshape its future.

Saturdays with The Glen Campbell Show, previously penciled into that time slot, shifting to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays. At the Movies will premiere Sept. 25; The Glen Campbell Show on Sept. 1 1.

BEDTIME BENNY Fans of The Benny Hill Show will have to stay up a little later as KPH0-TV (Channel 5) programmer Chuck Alvey has decided to program Soap at 10:30 p.m. weekdays. Soap had previously been slotted at 9 p.m. However, July ratings for The Bob Newhart Show, currently seen at 9 p.m., were so strong that Alvey decided to keep it in that slot. Channel 5 plans to slide The Benny Hill Show back to 11 p.m.

Monday through Friday, followed by The Odd Couple at 11:30 p.m. The Rockford Files will be dropped. Benny Hill managed to clobber the competition in the July ratings at 10:30 p.m., prompting Channel' 12 programmer Bob Allingham to say, "I wish like heck we'd have renewed it for some place." Channel 12 used to have local rights to the show, but concluded it wasn't that strong of an entry. EARLY MOVIE The piecemeal unveiling of KNXV-TV's (Channel 15) fall lineup continues. General Manager Ed Cooperstein said Tuesday that he plans to trim the amount of time devoted to the Financial News Network and insert a movie at 10:30 a.m.

weekdays, effective Oct. 4. Financial News Network, which has filled a 3'2 -hour block, will air from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. However, Bonanza, which will follow the morning movie at noon, will begin on Sept. 20.

Cooperstein also reported that a fall promotional theme has been chosen to replace the independent station's Comin' on Strong campaign. The UHF outlet plans to call itself the Funtastic 15.
