The Sydney Morning Herald Saturday, March 20, 1993 7 ead Jews Perfect solution for Strickland House still elusive listed a. lundereirs roiessor By GERALDINE O'BRIEN Heritage Writer The search for a new use or uses for the Strickland House estate is continuing, with 14 submissions already received and a call this week for further proposals. The architect Mr Howard Tanner, chairman of the advisory committee formed to assess the submissions, believed that while the response has been quite good, the elusive "perfect solution" may still be waiting. "It's such a wonderful building," he said, "there must be someone out there capable of working the equation The estate, with the magnificent 1850s house, Carrara, was one of the State Government's early listings in the 1989 asset sales. Instant and prolonged public outcry, however, forced a change of plan.

two large dormitories one starkly visible from the harbour may not necessarily remain. The committee, Mr Tanner said, is waiting to see what bidders suggest. Mrs Elinor Wrobel, who owns the Woolloomooloo Gallery, has proposed Carrara as a home for her extensive personal art collection, combined with the John Passmore collection of 200 paintings and a similar number of works on paper for which she is trustee. Mrs Wrobel would also like to establish an artist-in-residence scheme, art workshops and regular classical and jazz recitals. Other submissions include use as a museum-gallery, bookshop and coffee shop; a restaurant and craft centre; a performing arts centre with the stables converted for use by the Opera Foundation a private tertiary institution; an aged care centre; or a conference venue.

The 4.9 hectare estate was acquired by the Government in 1 9 1 4 as part of Lands Minister Mr Niels Nielsen's foreshores resumption scheme. Although the plan was to preserve foreshore parkland, the Government decided to use existing buildings on the site as a convalescent home. Although undistinguished dormitories were added later, the move at least preserved Carrara, designed by Frederick Hilly and occupied by one of Sydney's first lord mayors. The State Government is now looking for a bidder to restore the house, stables and garden (the restoration is estimated to cost about $2.5 million). The National Parks and Wildlife Service, which will administer the remainder of the estate as part of the Sydney Harbour National Park, is likely to occupy the former matron's cottage; the former nurses' home could be leased separately but the Jewish women and children.

Picture by Patrick cummins King of quiz and ABC take Logie honours By MARYANN STENBERG ADELAIDE: The German regime which invaded Europe during World War II referred to murdered Jewish people as the first Australian war crimes trial was told in Adelaide yesterday. Ivan Timofeyevich Polyukh-ovich, 77, is charged with being involved in the murder of up to 850 people and not fewer than 553 Jewish people, known as the Jews of Serniki, during the occupation of Ukraine in 1942. He is also charged in relation to the death of a Jewish woman and two children also from Serniki between August and September 1942. Professor Raul Hilberg, from Canada, a witness called to verify the existence of Adolf Hitler's plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe, said documents citing Jewish death statistics referred to the victims as plunderers in a bid to bring the unlawful killings into line with international law.

He said that in one final report from Ukraine sent by a German cavalry brigade to SS authorities in Germany, there was a "peculiar use of language camouflage language" noting the deaths of 13,788 plunderers. Professor Hilberg said this report and other documents made it "quite clear that those shot were Under the parameters of the War Crimes Act, it must be established that there was a policy of Jewish extermination in Europe and that the policy was carried out (Earlier this year a Holocaust theory opponent, the author David Irving, was refused entry into Australia. Mr Irving outraged Jewish communities worldwide in various publications, including a 1977 book called Hitlers War. which tried to dissociate Hitler from the Jewish annihilation.) Professor Hilberg said he estimated from documented evidence that more than 363,000 Jewish people from the Ukraine region were murdered in a four-month period from August 1942.

He said Germans preferred to gas Jews from urban areas, which not only made the slaughter less obvious, but also relieved Germans from face-to-face confrontation with their victims. But he said that in rural areas there was less need for execution squads to behave with circumspection and therefore mass killings at pit-sides became the norm in country Ukraine. The Director of Public Prosecutions told the court that Polyukhov-ich was a forest warden in Serniki at the time of the German occupation and collaborated in the extermination of the Serniki Jews. The trial, before Justice Brian Cox in the South Australian Supreme Court, is expected to continue for at least six weeks. Private jail a first for State The Premier opened NSWs first privately run jail yesterday at Junee, near Wagga Wagga, saying it would be the first of many.

Mr Fahey said the 600-bed Junee Correctional Centre would save his Government $4 million a year and inject $3 million a year into the local economy. "The opening of Junee Correctional Centre marks a new era in the management of corrective services in NSW," he said. "I am confident that this $53 million facility will become a model for best practice in the correctional system." The Minister for Justice, Mr Merton, said the jail, on 106 hectares near Junee, could hold 500 medium-security and 100 minimum-security prisoners. Mr Merton said the company running the jail, Australasian Correctional Management, would have to comply with Government standards relating to security and treatment of inmates. The first inmates are due to arrive at the centre on April 5.
