Ohio State, whose only blemish was a 17-16 loss to the Trojans in Pasadena, received half of the 42 first-place votes in United Press International's coaches poll, and 36 of 65 first-place votes in The Associated Press' poll of sportswriters and sports broadcasters. "I don't know what to say. I hope we can live up to it," said Coach Earle Bruce, who begins his second season at Ohio State. "I'm pleased to be No. 1 now, but the big thing is to be No.

1 at the end of the season, when it really founts. "I don't know who knows who No, 1 is. There are a lot of good teams like Alabama, Pitt, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Texas and I better mention Michigan and Purdue since they're in our. conference. "But it's not cut and dried; we've got to go out and work for it I hope we're picked No.

1 a lot while I'm here. If we're not up there, we've got worries. You're supposed to be No. 1 at Ohio State, I think." The Buckeyes took the top spot in the AP poll with 1,253 of a possible 1,300 points, and received 586 votes in the UPI poll. Alabama, which has the nation's longest winning streak at 21 games, follows the Buckeyes in both polls.

Pittsburgh, USC and Oklahoma are next in the AP polL Southwest Conference foes Houston and Arkansas are ranked sixth by UPI and AP, respectively. Following Houston, which will open Arizona State's season Sept 13, in the UPI poll, are Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas and Purdue. Nebraska also is ranked seventh by AP, followed by Houston, Purdue and Texas. AP'a second 10 is made up of Notre' Dame, Michigan, Florida State, North Carolina, Stanford, Georgia, Missouri, Penn State, Auburn and Washington. UPI closes out with Michigan, Notre.
