Film Writers Go On Trial Tuesday HOLLYWOOD, June 19. (U.P)Five Hollywood writers and directors who refused to say whether they were Communists flew towards Washington today for trial on contempt of. congress charges. -Film Writers Lester Cole, Ring Lardner, Alvah Bessie, Albert Maltz and Director Edward Dmytryk left by plane last night. About 1500 persons gave them a send-off rally.

Ten persons were charged with refusing to tell the house unAmerican activities committee whether they were Communists. Film Writers Dalton Trumbo and John Howard Lawson already have been convicted and started jail sentences June 9. The other eight waived a jury trial before. the Trumbo- Lawson conviction and signed a stipulation to be bound by whatever 'legal decisions arose from the case. Since then, however, they decided to enter their own pleadings and arguments.

Trials will be held in Washington Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Two other men involved, Samuel Ornitz and Herbert Biberman, also are en route. A third, Adrian Scott, is in a Hollywood hospital but plans to be in Washington by Thursday. 3 Enterprises File Incorporation Papers Articles of incorporation have been filed here for three Linn county enterprises, including the Blue Creek Lumber company, Lebanon; the Albany Baseball assoclation, and the Canyon Logging and Lumber company, The new lumber firm, with headquarters at Lebanon, is sponsored by E. Jungwirth, W. L. Barnes, Fred H. Stegeman and W. H.

McDonald, all of Lebanon. Capital stock is given as $10,000. The Albany corporation is non-profit organization without capital stock. Incorporators are Orville Wiseman, H. L.

L. Chambers and Harold Arnett. Paul Creek Bert and Ada Karr, Lyons, are incorporators of the Canyon company, Death Believed Suicide SALEM, June 19. (U.R) said today George P. Smith's fatal shotgun wounds ape parently were self-inflicted.

The 46-year-old Silverton store and garage owner was found on lonely road near Silverton yesterday. His body was found several feet from his car. Smith is survived by the widow, Marie; and six children. Mrs. Smith said she had no Idea why her husband would have shot himself.

Herald Monday, June 19, 1950 SALEM HE JAIL FLASHES ESCAPEE TOY SHOT GUN SALEM, June 19- (U.R) Jack J. Holt, Salem jail trusty escapee shot by city Officer Arch Wilson Saturday night, was in "fair condition today, Salem General, hospital reported. Holt was shot through the stomach by Wilson when he pulled what turned out to be a toy gun on the officer, Wilson shot three times, but at the same time, backed under the wheels of an oil tanker. Wilson's leg injuries were not serious, and no bones were broken. Car Stolen In Albany Found At Depoe Bay Recovery at Depoe Bay of an automobile stolen here late Thursday night or early Friday, was reported today by police.

The car is owned by William Claude Luther, 731 Elm street. Police found the car Saturday, parked in a Depoe Bay garage. The automobile was stolen from its parking place at First and Lyon streets, where it had been left by Luther Thursday with the keys in the ignition. The city council last week unanimously demanded the resignation of Chief Arley Mizar, effective June 30. 'One of the counts against Mizon was his alleged lack of cooperation with state police officers. The council has under consideration from former policemen for the post.

He was serving a term for disorderly conduct, and police records showed he has been arrested five times in recent years on minor charges, With Holt in the taxi-cab he was riding in was his wife and a 5-year-old girl. At the same time Bauman announced acceptance of the 50th member of the fast growing young men's civic, group. He is Bob Balch, manager of Leon's ladies' wear store. Plans are being laid for a special joint picnic meeting Sunday with the Sweet Home Jaycees at a location yet to be determined. Activities will include a Sweet, Home Lebanon softball game. Jaycees and families will participate.

Exempt License Plates Identify Department SALEM, June 19. (U.P) The letter on Oregon license year will have more identification, the secretary of state's office reported today, Heretofore, such automobiles bearing special exempt license plates could not necessarily be identified with any one branch of state or local government. But effective with the 1951 license plates, the letter for exalso will carry one of six departments: irrigation district owned, city owned, county owned, state owned, school district owned or publicly owned. Motorcycle Misses Curve, Killing Rider PORTLAND, June 19. (U.P) One youth was dead today and another seriously injured after their motorcycle ripped into a field near Sandy, yesterday.

Dead is Virgil LeRoy Dahrens, 26, of Sandy, while Ronald E. Fischer, 25, also of Sandy, is in critical condition at Providence hospital According to State Patrolman Mark Dezar the cycle missed a curve at a high speed and ground itself into a farm field. Dahrens is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Dahrens, Sandy, and two brothers.

Isom Funeral Rites Held Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Elizabeth Isom, 61, who died at her home at Halsey, June 14, 1950, were held at the Halsey First Christian church Saturday afternoon, June 17, under the direction of the Fortmiller Fredericksen Funeral home of Albany. The Rev.

W. O. Jones, pastor of that church, officiated. Pianist was Mrs. Jess Cross and Mrs.

Harry Commons and Mrs. George Cross sang. Bearers were Frank Gansle, George Workinger, Kenneth Worklinger, George Smith, Paul Quimby and Omar Falk. Mrs. Lyle Chance and Mrs.

Dora Dannen were in charge of the many lovely floral pieces. Burial was in the Alford cemetery near Harrisburg. Riley Funeral Rites Held Requiem mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic church Monday morning for Mrs. Mamie S.

Interment was made at the Willamette Memordal Park. Services were conducted by the Fisher Funeral Home, Cherry Crop Damaged YAKIMA, June 19. (U.P) Heavy rains in the Yakima valley have caused from five to 25 per cent damage of this year's cherry crop, it was reported today, C. A. Huntley, deputy state horticulture inspector, said in addition to the spotted damage, it was earlier estimated that from 50 to 65 per cent of the crop would be lost as a result of the severe winter, SERVES OUT FINE Frank Allison Murlie, 40, Portland, was fined $15 in city court this morning, after "his conviction on vagrancy and after hours counts.

Unable to pay the fine, Murlie was confined to the city jail, where he will serve an 8-day sentence in lieu of the fine. He was arrested early Sunday morning by city police officers. Private Ambulance Service Established Establishment of a new private ambulance service here has been completed by Bob Rutter and Don Garris, of Portland and they announce today they are now ready for service, The two have come here from Portland with their wives and families and have set up quarters at 728 E. 4th Ave. near Lafayette, where they available via phone 2200, day or night, with no distance limitations on calls. The new enterprise will be known as the Arrow Ambulance service. Equipment includes a new Pontiac ambulance with accomodations for three patients, and with oxygen tank and first aid materials valued at $200.

Demo Chairman to Visit PORTLAND, June 19, (U.P) William W. Boyle, chairman of the Democratic national committee will be in Oregon Saturday and Sunday for brief stops here and in The Dalles. Making the western trip with Boyle is Mrs.

India Edwards, director of the women's division of the Democratic central committee. Final Markets STOCKS NEW' YORK, June' 19. (U.R)Stocks turned down today when the house and means. committee moved toward a tax bill involving rise in corporation levies.

The market had held fairly well up to the last hour. Leading issues rose in sufficient numbers to raise the averages few cents. Meanwhile, a long list of special issues moved widely between a decline. of 4. points and a rise of 5 points.

Late in the day when the tax problem appeared to deflate market sentiment, the leaders gave ground and the whole market displayed. an easier tone, Volume rose moderately. Dow Jones closing stock averages: 30 industrials 222.09 off 0.62; 20 railroads 55.53 off 0.43; 15 utilities 43.35 unchanged; 65 stocks 77.87 -off 0.27. Sales today approximated 290,000 shares, compared with 1,180,000 traded Friday. GRAIN CHICAGO, June 19.

Old Lebanon Church LEBANON, June 19 (Special) Dismantling of the old Christian church building here, replaced by new structure, has been started by William Goble, Jack Herman and George Row, whose contract calls for removal of the building by July 12. Lumber for this building was out in 1912 by the father of Ralph Scroggin and construction took place in 1913. The four large and eight small stained glass windows will be taken to Waterloo for installation in a prospective community church there. Either the Sweet Home or Crabtree church will receive the neon sign and the remainder of the materials will be selvaged.

Furnishings have been installed in the new Christian church. Scio Man Arrested On Three Lebanon Counts LEBANON, June 19 (Special) Charles Dolezal of Route 1,. Scio was arrested in Lebanon Sunday on charges of being drunk in car, carrying an, open bottle in car, and going the wrong direction on a one-way street. Arresting officer was Wes Plummer, according to the police docket. of City Recorder Ilda' Unger.

No date for the trial had been set. Floyd Thomas of Waterloo also was arrested Sunday for not carrying a driver's license. However the docket revealed that Thomas later appeared in city court with an up-to-date license and was released without fine. Arresting officer was John Steele. C.

of C. Managers Return From Training Sessions Three Linn county chamber of commerce managers returned late! Saturday from a week's training course in chamber work at Ney. More than 150 western chamber men attended the courses of the Western Institute on the University, of Nevada campus. Linn representatives were A. C.

Elston, Sweet Home, Oliver Larson, Lebanon, and Donald Donahue, manager of the Albany chamber. Fred Brenne, Eugene chamber manager, was elected president of the institute. Swimming Party Ends in Tragedy LONGVIEW, June 19. (U.RAn afternoon swimming party ended in death yesterday when Merrill Petersen, 20, drowned after pulling his sister from the Cowlitz river about three miles from here. It was the second water tragedy for the Longview family in three Four-year-old Judy Giberson; daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. William Giberson, drowned in the Cowlitz near here Friday. Peterson was riding in a surplus army duck when his sister Janet, 17, fell into the stream. He dived after her and was able to bring her safely back to the duck before he sank from sight. Two other members of the party, Betty Cassidy, 18, of Longview, and her brother Dave, 17, immedlately plunged in after him, but he could not be found.

About 60 volunteers searched the river last night, but could not find the body. Lebanon B. P. W. Club To Hold Installation LEBANON, June 19.
