iiattiii i Paradise Beach is all show OMAR KHAYYAM had il wrong. The celebrated Arab poet thought one needed only a of wine, a loaf of bread and "thee beside me in the wilderness" to be in paradise. Judging by Channel 9's Paradise Beach. Australia's newest soap opera, one also needs teeth. Lots ot teeth.

And the ability to till out skimpy bathing attire with bulges in all the right places. Indeed they would appear to be the only criteria tor finding work in front of the camera for those cast members under what used to be laughingly called the age of consent. As long as there are no obvious oral gaps, the dental work of older cast members does not seem to be so important. Thank giHKlness for older cast members. Robert Colehy.

as an antipodean really stands out in Paradie Heath and is enjoying not only la) being in work but (b) being absolutely beastly to those around him. But he should be careful about over-playing the R. Ewing-siyle character because he offers, so far. the only really interesting personality in Paradise Hciu and so is in danger of being killed off. You can imagine what the T-shirts i 1 1 say: Who shot Tom Barsby The result of all the above, when added to some spectacular beach and holiday resort footage, is a series that looks fantastic.

However, looking great does not equate to being great. Paradise Beach is about as deep as the zinc cream on Grommet Ritchie's nose. For those ho have missed the first week of Paradise Beach Grommet is one of the characters. If you did miss the first week, you haven't missed very much. Tune in tomorrow' and it will take no more than one or two milliseconds to catch up.

AND so we say farewell to the House Of Elliott. This second series of ABC-TV Sunday night alternative to 60 Minutes has been increasingly disappointing. Your armchair critic, however, optimistic as always, has fond hopes for a rousing farewell for the final episode which screens at 7.30 tonight. The first series, Inch began on ABC-TV late last year, was absolutely riveting. The story of two sisters left penniless by a philandering father, it was a shining example of why the British have always outpointed the Americans when it comes to television drama.

However, after a strong beginning, series two has bogged down in melodrama and some ludicrous plot developments. By the middle of the second series we had the younger of the Elliott sisters launching herself into a lustful love affair ith a married peer of the realm while the elder sister's own marriage, to a silent film-maker, was coming apart at the seams, unlike her well-made frocks which were sewn to last. This resulted in one recent episode in which in four different scenes, the sisters themselves, the married sister and her husband, the younger sister and her lover, the lover and his wife ALL exchanged these memorable words "we need to talk." When that happens the producer needs to talk. To the script editor. BRITISH drama of a different kind, the teddibly stiff-upper-lip kind, as to be seen on Days Of Majesty.

on Channel 7. last Wednesday. Here was the very real drama of pomp and ceremony, Buckingham Palace style. I mean did you know that tradition demands that an MP is taken hostage in Buck Pal when the sovereign visits the Houses of Parliament. All very quaint.

The excellent host of Days Of Majesty was David Suchet. tondly remembered as the manic Blott from the only mini-series in which George Cole ever appeared in a nude scene (and thankfully the last) in Blott (hi The Landscape. m'mm JUNE 6 -12 Rugby League.
