6 THE POST-STANDARD, Syracuse, N. Saturday, March 29, 1952 Howell Arrested In Abortion Case On Plumber's Tip Palmer Leighton Howell, 38, of 1922 S. Salina as he identified to police, was arrested yesterday in connection with performing an abortion. District Attorney Jesse E. Cantor said Howell would be arraigned today in special sessions court on an abortion charge.

It was the second such case to come up in court this week. Earlier, Mrs. Sue Helen Thomas, 39 of 161 E. Onondaga under indictment on two abortion counts, appeared in police court to answer a third abortion charge. She was held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Deputy Chief Harold F. Kelly said police were informed of the case by a plumber who was called to an outer James st. apartment yesterday to unplug a sewer line. Patrolman Joseph Heick and Detectives Francis Gam and Dennis Flynn talked to occupants of the apartment and thru conflicting stories learned that an illegal op jb eration had been performed in the! house. Howell was taken into custody i and admitted performing an illegal operation.

Chief Kelly said. Police files indicated Hoxvell was sentenced from two to four years in 1946 on an abortion charge and SHE Joan Nies, left, and Mrs. Hazel Paschall were a bit leery when tried out a little chemistry experiment orior to curtain time of-the Gold Rush of show staged by Syracuse University faculty last night.
