a former old resident of the city, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. Ashbaugh, in East Liverpool, 0-, was held yesterday, afternoon at the chapel of Sewland Gwln, undertaker. Fire Chief Strack is investigating the prank of a small boy it is charged, caused the fire department to make a run to Vincennes street and the Charles-town road Thursday night on a false alarm.

It is charged that the youngster procured a key to a fire alarm box and turned in an alarm just to sec the department make a run. Oscar Whiteman, 12 years old, died at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his mother. Mrs. Ella White-man, 1:17 Gait street, after a long illness. The board for two days has been making an investigation and this evening the question will be taken up as to whether the ban should again be put bn. W. Marshall Varble, county health commissioner, insists the city of board of' health is not making a proper effort to see that physicians of JeTcrsonville do their duty in ordering quarantine cards posted. He said yesterday that he had telegraphed to Dr. J. N.

Hurts', secretary of the State Board of Health, of the conditions from his view-point and intended notifying Maj. Frickp. of the United States Public Health Service. Thadilcus MeCulloch Dies. Relatives in Jeffersonville yesterday were notified or the death of Thaddeus MeCulloch at Mt.

Vernon. Posey county, Indiana, of influenza. He was county agricultural agent and a graduate of Wabash College. Crawfdrdsville. His parents.

Mr. and J. Frank reside near Cha'rlestown, and his father is president of the New Albany National Bank. Mr. MeCulloch is survived by his wife.

Mrs. Edith Smith MeCulloch, and two sons, Thaddeus MeCulloch. and Charles MeCulloch. There are three brothers and a sister, Harold MeCulloch. John MeCulloch.

The body will be taken to Crawfordsville, for burial. Shirt Slaking Censes. Women who wenfto the Government Depot. Jeffersonville. yesterday to deliv er their esewing were notified that no more shirts would be given out until further orders.

The sewing department presented a deserted appearance yester day and the tables were barren of the usual piles ot garments, it is tnougnt some of the women who have been re pairing and altering shirts may be retained. At one period more than 3,000 women were doing sewing for tho Gov ernment Depot and the number became so great that substations had to be opened. Tnese have been closed. Mrs. Edith Strauss Dies.

She alleges that while operating a punching machine at the plant of tho company November 7 her right hand R-as caug'ht in the machinery and so badly mangled as to necessitate the amputation of the member at the wrist. It is charged in the complaint that Ihe defendant is 15 years old and her employment at the work sh was doing was a violation of the child labor law. Flans For Fall Jubilee. The New Albany Retail Merchants' Association yesterday announced the appointment of the executive board to arrange for the annual Merchants and Farmers' Fall Jubilee, to b5 heUX at Grenwood Park next fall. Knoefel is chairman of the board and the other members are C. C. Brown and Frank M. Genung. It was stated that the date will be fixed soon and committees appointed to arrange details.

The jubilee will be held earlier next year than usual. Instead of being a two days' affair as in the past it will be continued for three and probably four days. The association indorsed the United States Employment Service and pledged the co-operation of the members in the work of the organization. The proposed affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce in the promotion of the interests of the city and county also was Indorsed. Killed By Train.

The body of Clarence Flickner. of New Albany, a Southern railroad brakeman. who was killed by a train at Princeton, arrived at 7:30 o'clock last nig-ht and was taken to the home of his father, "William T. Flickner, Indiana avenue, Fairmont Park. Arrangements for the funeral have not been announced.

Flickner was tngaped in switching and he was run over by a cut of cars. The accident happened Thursday night and he died. arly yesterday morninff. Flickner was 21 years eld and fs survived by his wife and one chilv vho live at Kast Fifteenth and Kim streets. He also is survived by his parents.

Mrs. George Westerkamp, Silver ilills, Xew Albany, was notified yesterday of the death of her sister. Miss Ella Mescher. of Cincinnati, a Hed Cross nurse, who died in Liverpool November 11. Miss Mescher often had visited in New Albany, Where she was widely known.

She sailed overseas with a Rod Cross unit from Cincinnati nearly a 'year ago and had been in service in hospitals near the firing line in France. She became ill of an acute stomach trouble, for which she was operated on September 24. but cablegrams that had been received by members of her family were of an encouraging nature. Five weeks ago Mrs. "Westerkamp received from her sister a letter dated at Liverpool atating that she was.
