i yyyyy FINN- TrMay, October 30, 1981 The Arizona Republic Pilot dies 'horsing around' under power lines; 2 passengers hurt EEFCP.E YCU FAISST THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME INVESTIGATE By Ken Wayman Special for The Republic DRAKE A pilot who died after his plane crashed into high-voltage electric-transmission lines was "horsing around" to tease his passengers, one of the three survivors told investigators Thursday. Investigators identified the victim as Gregory Hasse, 23, of Englewood, N.J. They said the crash occurred Wednesday at about 5:30 p.m. in a remote area of Hell's Canyon about four miles east of here and 35 miles north of Prescott. Sgt.

Joe Villarreal of the Yavapai County Sheriffs Office said he was told the crash occurred as Hasse tried to fly the plane under the transmission lines. Villarreal said the plane's tail assembly struck one of the lines, throwing the craft into other lines and cutting it in half. The force of the crash also snapped one line and twisted two metal towers but caused no power outage, according to an Arizona Public Service Co. spokeswoman. Villarreal said Hasse's left leg was severed in the crash and that he apparently bled to death before rescuers reached the nearly inaccessible crash site.

Investigators said the Cessna Skyhawk had left Emest A. Love Airport in Prescott at about 5 p.m. It apparently crashed about 20 minutes later. They said the crash wasn't reported until about 7 p.m. because it took an uninjured passenger, William Nakayana, 23, of Chino Valley, nearly two hours to walk through rough terrain to Drake to notify authorities.

Investigators said the other two passengers, David Nelson, 23, and Debra Morgan, 18, both of Chino Valley, suffered broken legs. They were evacuated by helicopter to John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, where they were reported in stable condition Thursday. Villarreal said Nakayana told investigators that he was seated in the rear of the aircraft and had his seat belt fastened but that the other three did not have their belts secured. "He (Hasse) was horsing around and tried to fly under the power lines to tease us," Villarreal quoted Nakayana as saying.

A spokeswoman for Southwest Airmotive Corp. at the Prescott airport said Hasse had rented the plane Wednesday afternoon.
