Your Hit Parade did.

CBS Radio carried the musical countdown show from 1935 until 1950, when it moved to TV for a nine-year engagement. Your Hit Parade succumbed because of two factors, according to Andre Baruch, who served as the show's announcer for its entire run. "Rock roll came in. How many ways can you do Rock Around the Clock?" Baruch said. Viewers just couldn't cotton to Snooky Lanson singing Bill Haley tunes.

The second reason, Baruch explained Thursday, was that "disc jockeys were creating their own polls. The 'Top 10' didn't mean as much. Away it went." That is, until this year, when Baruch and his wife, singer Bea Wain, who performed on Your Hit Parade during the '30s and '40s, began hosting a syndicated radio revival. KLFF radio, better known as K-Life (1360 AM), picked up the one-hour show last weekend. It airs at 6 p.m.

Saturdays and 9 a.m. Sundays. The show's simple formula of counting down the week's top 10 records has been preserved, taking listeners back in time to the '30s, '40s and '50s with the hits of a specific week being chosen at random. There is one major modification to the format. Instead of using studio singers to perform the tunes, your Hit Parade now plays the original hit recordings.

"It brings back that personal song to a great many people," Baruch said. Said Ms. Wain, "All the songs were a part of the times." Your Hit Parade is heard on 50 radio stations nationwide. "There is a time for nostalgia, and we're into it right now," Baruch said. But, said Ms.

Wain, "It's not just nostalgia. A lot of young people can't wait to hear what the top songs are." Said Baruch, "Young people who have been listening constantly to rock 'n' roll are suddenly discovering big band Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and the glamour that went with it." Either way, who can remember the top 10 from a week in 1947? During its days on radio, the name of the tune selected as No. 1 was a closely guarded secret. Only Baruch and the show's producer knew its identity. "They didn't tell us what it was.

We used to rehearse all the songs, but we never knew," said Ms. Wain, a hit maker herself with the original version of Deep Purple. That created excitement for the performers and musicians as well as the audience during the live 9 p.m. Saturday feed to the East Coast. At midnight, everyone returned to the studio to redo Four Hit Parade for the West Coast.

"In between, everyone used to go out and relax," Ms. Wain said. Baruch added with a laugh, "And, believe me, they were relaxed." Until last year, for 6 'A years the couple hosted a daily radio talk show in Florida. Their children lived in California. "It was just too far wny" Ms.

Wain said. So they packed up and moved west. The Baruchs tape two segments of Your Hit Parade each week. "We kid around," Ms. Wain said.

Baruch said, "We tell personal stories," noting that each show also includes an "almanac" listing the news, sports happenings and the motion picture and Broadway hits of that week back in time. Your Hit Parade may never have been resurrected had it not been for David Custis in Philadelphia, who had compiled detailed week-by-week lists of every tune heard on the program. "He's made a life's work of Your Hit Parade, Baruch said. Custis pitched his idea to the couple, who took it to a syndicator, Radio Arts, which "ate it up," Baruch said. Custis now supplies the research, Baruch does the writing and the couple tapes the program, which began airing in some markets in March.

However, sports reporter and longtime Sports-line host George Allen has been let go. "He's been dismissed from the program department, but he could have a position at the station," said Johnny Andrews, KTAR programmer.

Andrews declined to elaborate. Allen had been host of Sportsline for five years until being demoted to a sportscasting position in February. Hamilton comes to Phoenix from WHLO radio in Akron, Ohio, where his duties included calling the play-by-play for the Cleveland Force of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He has also worked at WWWE in Cleveland and done play-by-play for the Cleveland Crusaders of the defunct World Hockey Association. Andrews said, "I've been familiar with his work since 1973.

1 was thinking about making a change and his name came to mind." Asked why the change was made, Andrews replied, "I was looking for someone who had a little more experience." Peterson, he said, will be "more effective as a producer, as a sports reporter and as a live interviewer in the field." Parker is a part-time employee of KTAR. Sportsline normally airs between 6:05 and 10 p.m. weekdays, but is frequently interrupted in the summer by Los Angeles Dodgers baseball broadcasts. Andrews said that a Saturday edition of the program, airing from 10 a.m. to noon, will premiere June 6.
