In 1922, the "Call of the Canyon" was filmed near the lodge and Carl Mayhew of Flagstaff was hired to do the still photography. Mayhew The lodge was a family-operated inn with 10 guest rooms. It was known for its home-cooked specialties prepared over a wood-burning stove. Meals were served in a room overlooking the creek. Many notable persons, including Lord Halifax, Clark Gable, Susan Hayward, Cesar Romero, Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Hara, were guests in the 10-room lodge.

A one-room log cabin SEDONA A fire early Wednesday destroyed Mayhew's Oak Creek Lodge, a three-story "log cabin castle" which was partly constructed in the 1880s. Deputy Fire Chief Gary Anderson of the Sedona-Oak Creek Fire Department said the fire was reported at 2:41 a.m. at the lodge, on U.S. 89A, 11 miles north of here. He said 40 firemen were called, but they were delayed in fighting the blaze because they creek and get through a chain-link fence that surrounded the lodge.

Anderson said the fire apparently was arson-related or accidentally started by a transient who may have been sleeping in the building. Officials said no value could be placed on the structure because it had been abandoned for several years. It was owned by the U.S. Forest Service. The Border Industrial Development a non-profit organization of Nogales community leaders, wants to form the zone. Robert A.

Lawler, president of Nogales Foreign Trade Zone signed an agreement with the development corporation last fall to operate the facility once it is established. According to Lawler, the trade zone basically would be an area in which manufacturers can bring goods free of custom duties either for warehousing until they can be exported or for processing before being sold in the United States. This procedure, he said, saves time and money and permits deferring payment of custom duties until a sale is assured. Lawler's company has an option on a 28-acre Earcel adjacent to the U.S. Customs facility on the order, one mile west of the downtown area.

He said he has had letters of inquiry from manufacturers as far away as the East Coast, but all plans are contingent on U.S. Foreign Trade Board approval of the zone. Lawler said present plans call for construction of two warehouses. John Daponte, executive secretary of the Foregn Trade Board in Washington, presided at the hearing at the City Council chambers. Nogales (Arizona) Mayor Floretino Fontes told the board the city has endorsed the project since its inception.

William Baffert, chairman of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, said the county believes the project will promote industry, provide more jobs, diversify the economy and encourage investment in the area. It also has been endorsed by Gov. Bruce Babbitt and other state and federal officials. Daponte said comments on the trade zone can be forwarded to the board of examiners during the next 30 days. He said a decision would be made within three months.

Lawler said the zone could be in operation by the fall of 1981. Parfart for Warming ik harpeuag coasting or ytteati. or Jut Bltia fuoJ Siaply viail ftd play you'll ba im-proued, wa aaaur yoa.
