Service 7:00 P.M, Pontiff calls on media to respect human body United Press International VATICAN CITY Pope John Paul Unsaid this week that modern media such aa television and film should strive for purity and respect in depicting the human body and should not treat it as an "anonymous object." He said the media should be guided by ethical standards set by centuries of classical culture.

The pope, speaking to about 15,000 people in St Peter's Square for his weekly general audience, said the classical ethos of the human body in artistic culture was strictly tied to Christ's teachings that the body is a holy temple to be respected. "We cannot consider the body as an objective reality beyond the personal subjectivism of human beings, of men and women," he said. Referring to visual communication, the pope said modern artists, film makers and photographers should develop a sense of purity and respect when using the human body. "In this vast and diverse area, it is necessary to raise questions about the ethos of the body, delineated by the studies undertaken thus far, on the human body as an object of culture," the pope said. John Paul said that often the use of the body in television and films makes it an "anonymous object" completely removed from the spirituality of the person.

During the audience, he also said the Easter season was a time that called for "inner conversion." The pope began Vatican Holy Week activities April 12 by blessing palms and olive branches during an outdoor Palm Sunday Mass in the square before about 40,000 persons. Holy Week activities culminate Sunday, when moje than 100,000 are expected to hear the pope deliver his Easter blessing and address from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
