She spoke to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area Multiple Sclerosis board of trustees at a luncheon at the Phoenix Country Club. Ms. Langer said an important part of children developing positive attitudes toward reading is storytelling in the home.

She said this is becoming a lost art. "Most stories involve people or animals, a triggering event that makes things go wrong and a combined effort to set things right," she said. "This is story grammar. Children are exposed to modifying words and complex language. Poor readers do not get this." Also affecting a child's reading ability is the quality of leisure time, Ms.

Langer said. 'Children are given games that amuse rather than involve them," she said. "Also, a 16 month-old child is picked up at the day-care center and plopped in front of a television." Ms. Langer said she is in favor of using television as a learning tool, but storytelling encourages children to read books because they already have basic story structure. Phil Keller, a seventh-grade student at Madison No.

2 School, was honored at the luncheon for his participation in the Valley's MS READ-a-thon program. He raised more than $300 in pledges by reading 27 books during February. "Very often, parents of junior-high-School students who read poorly will ask yhat can be done to improve their child's reading ability," Judith Langer said. In Tucson, Pima County sheriffs deputies said the burned aircraft involved in the midair collision was registered to Alaska Transportation San Jose, Calif.

Painter was a salesman for SPAD subsidiary of Alaska Transportation, they said. The collision occurred as Holgate's plane made landing approach to Tucson International Airport on a flight from Phoenix, according to a sheriffs office spokesman, Sgt. Mark Pettit. The pther plane had taken off about 9:25 a.m. from ural Ryan Field after fueling for a flight to Nogales, he said.

Jay Mlazgar, manager of SPAD, said Painter Bad worked as an aircraft-parts salesman for two IQonths. Mlazgar said the Painters were planning to fly (from Tucson to Nogales, then to Douglas to visit Mrs. Painter's family. He said Painter was considered a good pilot. f-Holgate was piloting his 1965 single-engine fCessna 182 at about 4,000 feet when it apparently clipped the top of the other plane, which reportedly was climbing.

Deputies said the Cessna lost a nose wheel in the collision, but Holgate piloted it to a crash landing in the desert. burned aircraft was found three miles southeast of Ryan Field, while the other plane about two miles southeast of the airfield. Ryan Field, which serves private planes, is about 10 miles west of the city limits, while jTucson International is on the city's southern edge. An eyewitness to the crash, Bob Charlton, said one plane spiraled down, plowing a hole in the ground when it hit, then flipped on its back. Charlton said he was standing in the front yard of his daughter's home near the airfield when he heard what he called a "thump" in the sky.

He said his wife cried out, "My God, those planes came together." Pettit said, "After they collided, the aircraft spun to the Earth and crashed and burned. They came down in flames. Two bodies were recognizable only as human. It was a pretty intense fire." Debris from the burned aircraft including papers and aircraft logs was found scattered over a half-mile area, Pettit said. ,2 The wheel from Holgate's plane was discovered not far from the wreckage of the burning plane, he said.

A spokesman for Rural-Metro Fire Co. said the Piper Cherokee Archer 181 was "completely obliterated." According to friends, Painter and his wife lived with Painter's mother, Juanita, who is a checker at a Safeway store in Sun City. James M. Fisher, 8921 N. 17th Phoenix, a neighbor of Juanita Painter for the past 15 years, described the Painters as a "charming, wonderful couple who were practically newlyweds." In Phoenix, Department of Public Safety spokesman Allan Schmidt said Miller reported having engine trouble in his Cessna 210 five miles east of Sun City, and he lost power at 3,000 feet as he neared Deer Valley Airport, where he was going to attempt an emergency landing.

"As soon as I realized what was happening, I -called Deer Valley Airport, and then the engine cut out," Miller said. i Schmidt said the airplane came down about 8 p.m. in a field just west of the freeway, hit a ditch and bounced over a fence and onto the southbound lane of the freeway. It then crashed into the median and slid into the northbound lane. Schmidt said the airplane "nosed in," collapsing iis front landing gear and propeller.

Phoenix police officer witnessed the crash, and another witness rushed to the downed craft to shut off the fuel and power, Schmidt said. The crash blocked the freeway for several hours, and DPS patrolmen rerouted northbound traffic to Union Hills Drive and Deer Valley Road, two miles north. A 9" diag. BLACK WHITE PORTABLE TV.
