Joe McNamara, after serving a one-year morning stint, was pushed back to the afternoon shift he previously held for many years; afternoon man Randy Davis was moved up to middays. Ed Mack, who had handled the 10 a.m.

to 2 p.m. shift, came off the air to devote time to his duties as production director. Crawford, 28, joined KARZ last fall doing weekends and fill-in. He previously worked at KNUI on Maui in Hawaii. "We just felt Don will give us a stronger morning," explained KARZ station manager Del Hull.

The morning shift is considered the most important because listenership is at the day's peak. A strong morning show can ultimately influence listenership throughout the day. KARZ, 960 on the AM dial, was formerly KOOL radio, but was sold by KOOL RadioTelevision Inc. in March '79 to Stauffer Communications. Stauffer took over on May 1, 1979.

Since then the station has been trying to carve out a new identity in the marketplace with its adult contemporary format. One minor stumbling block has been the establishment of a proper nickname. While broadcasters routinely refer to KARZ as "cars," a poll taken last summer showed that listeners read the call letters as "cares." KARZ has now hired a firm, the Research Group, to survey how the public reads the call letters before having announcers refer to it by a nickname. WINDY CITY IMPORT Steve Casey, music director of Chicago's WLS radio, has been tapped as program director of KUPD, replacing the departed John Sebastian. Casey formerly programmed KUPD's sister station, KKKQ, and was research director of both outlets.

He left here in October. "I'm a 'Phoenix forever' person," said Casey, reached Thursday, morning at his WLS office. "I also love that radio station." Casey, 26, earlier worked in the Valley at KRIZ. However, in recent years, he has worked closely with Sebastian, first at KDWB in Minneapolis, then at Los Angeles' KHJ. Sebastian, meanwhile, started work Thursday as program director of WCOZ, an FM rocker in Boston.

"John and I have worked together since '72," said Casey. "Now I'm going to have to try to do it without him around." Casey views the Phoenix market as somewhat more competitive than Chicago, primarily because there are more stations here, and said KUPD's hard-rockin' approach will be maintained. KUPD station manager Lloyd Melton said Casey was an ideal choice because of his familiarity with the station's computer and music research systems. Casey will start at KUPD in mid-June. LOCAL LINE Bud Foster, former Channel 10 reporter and currently 10 p.m.

newscast producer at Channel 3, is headed for Tucson's KOLD-TV where he will report and anchor weekend newscasts. Foster starts on June 14 Channel 3, meanwhile, has hired Bill Best as executive news producer. Best, who will start June 9, has previously worked as a TV news director and anchorman Channel 10 plans to drop Medical Center from its 10:30 p.m. Sunday slot and replace it with syndicated reruns of The Dean Martin Show, starting June 8. TELEVISION TONIGHT NBC offers a musical special, Uptown A Tribute to the Apollo Theater, at 8 p.m.
