Stevens broke service seven times in the match and double-faulted once. Allen double-faulted six times in the first set. "I played some very careless points at times and the games she won came as result of hurrying me," said Stevens, 23. Shriver, 18, who meets the winner of the Navratilova -Smith match today, was pleased with all aspects of her game except her serves, "I really do wish I could serve better," said Shriver, who defeated Navratilova at the U.S. Open in 1978.

Pro Tennis Championships in Brookline, Mass. Z7 Clerc, the No. 8 seed from Argentina, advanced to today's semifinal match against fourth-seeded Eddie Dibbs, a 6-1, 7-6 winner over sixth-seeded Hans Gildemeister of Chile. Third seed Gene Mayer beat No. 7 Victor Pecci "i'of Paraguay, 6-4, 6-1, and fifth seed Jose Higueras of Spain ousted unseeded Van Winitsky, 6-1, 6-4.

It was the second meeting between Connors, ranked third in the world, and the 22-year-old 5 Clerc, ranked 19th. In March, Connors defaulted with a sprained back while leading, 6-4, 6-2, in a best-of-five-set championship match in Costa Rica. Connors looked unbeatable as he raced through the first set, holding serve throughout and breaking Clerc in the seventh and ninth games. But in the second set, Clerc rediscovered his favorite high bouncing topspin ground strokes and Connors' forehand began to fall apart, "In the first set I wasn't playing my tennis," 2.. Clerc said.

"I changed my strategy in the second 5 'set and started hitting high topspin. In the first j- 8et I was slicing the ball and I usually never slice." mi', Connors said, "I played well in the first set but my mind started wandering in the second set a 2 little bit. I would hit a looper and he would hit a looper back. I should have been moving in on and going to the net" Clerc broke Connors serve in the first and third games of the second set and lost his serve in the second game, but both players held the rest of the way as Clerc took the set, 6-4. JJ The most exciting game of the match came with "Connors serving with a 0-2 deficit in the third and final set.

Connors went up, 40-0, but allowed the game to go to deuce eight times. After staving off JJive break points, Connors took the game by J- "ripping a forehand approach shot that Clerc handle. The set then went to 5-3 with both players serve. But Connors made two ground-troke errors and double-faulted in the ninth game, and Clerc drilled a backhand cross-court vpassihg shot to break through and win the match. Dibbs, who hasn't lost a set in the tournament, needed just 17 minutes to grab the first set, 6-1, jumped to a 5-2 lead in the second before losing his concentration.

Gildemeister broke Dibbs' serve on the eighth and 10th games to force a tiebreaker, which he lost, 7-5. West received encouragement through the marathon from other runners who joined him in some of his laps, but met Friday morning with an unfriendly passer-by who threw a cup of hot coffee at him, said one of the nurses treating him. He was not injured. With his legs bandaged for support, West ran his last two miles with a police cruiser escort. He was followed by a dozen members of the Simsbury Youth Theater band playing Sousa marches from the back of a flatbed truck. tssoriated Press HARTFORD, Conn.

Accompanied by a police escort and a band pumping out John Philip Sousa marches, runner Andy West completed his 250th mile in a 72-hour, fund-raising marathon around the Civic Center on Friday. "I'm tired and kind of glad it's over," West said, smiling and catching his breath after finishing his grueling run. "I'm going to catch up on my sleep." "The only reason I do this kind of thing is for the kids with cystic fibrosis," said West, a 21-year-old Southington resident and track coach at St Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain. The marathon was undertaken as a fund-raising effort to help finance a cross-country run to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "The heat was really tough," West said of the muggy central Connecticut weather that pushed the temperature over 100 degrees at times.

The marathon raised more than $8,500, but a final figure was not available when West completed the run. The United Bank and Trust Co. of Hartford contributed the bulk of the money $7,200, which was $100 for each hour. During the 72 hours that began shortly after noon Tuesday, West ran about 18 hours during each day. On his breaks he would rest inside an air-conditioned van parked outside the Civic Center, while medical personnel treated his blisters and sore muscles.
