Sneak Previews Mark Nykanen, reporter-host of KAET-TV Arizona Weekly news magazine program, will join NBC News in Chicago next month as an investigative correspondent for the Special Segment portion of NBC Nightly News. Nykanen, 28, tendered his resignation at Channel 8 Wednesday after spending the previous day in New York where he signed a three-year contract with the network. Joining Nykanen in Chicago will be his wife, Arizona Republic reporter Ann Inskeep. Special Segment, formerly titled Segment Three, features in-depth reports.

"They have one investigative unit in New York. I'm, in essence, the second investigative reporter they've hired (for Special Segment)," Nykanen said Wednesday afternoon. The original Special Segment unit (comprised of producer Ira Silverman and reporter Brian Ross) was responsible four months ago for bringing the Abscam scandal, in which the FBI agents "rtung" congressional members for allegedly taking bribes from "Arab businessmen," to the American public. Nykanen wasn't a consistent viewer of NBC Nightly News until Special Segment was introduced. "It caught my eye at least two years ago," he said, noting that "it is the principle format difference in the nightly news shows." Nykanen and NBC have been flirting for several months.

"I sent a tape off to the recruiter for NBC owned-and-operated stations in October," said Nykanen. "He kicked the tape up to the network." In March, Nykanen met with NBC News President William Small and Vice President Sylvia Westerman when the pair were in Paradise Valley for executive strategy sessions at the Mountain Shadows resort. "It wasn't so much that I was looking to get out of Channel 8, 1 was looking to get a better job," said Nykanen, who previously worked as news director of KDKB radio and contributing editor to the New Times Weekly newspaper. "I was very pleased to be hired, but it didn't come as a complete surprise to me because we had been talking for months," he said. The New York native, who moved to Tempe at age 15, will start work in Chicago on July 7.

He's worked at the PBS station for two years. Channel 8 programmer Chuck Allen said Nykanen's departure is "really a blow" to the station. "You can't replace Mark Nykanen. You can try." Allen said that the station is already sifting through resumes in search of a replacement "It's going to be a tough one," he said. Nykanen, though, said, "It's Arizona Weekly) going to be a fine show without me.

They're incredibly talented people." LOCAL LINE Former KYW-TV anchorman Vines Leonard, who left last month after spending more than 20 years at the Philadelphia station, is expected in town this week and plans to meet soon with KPNX-TV (Channel 12) news director Al Buch. Leonard and Buch have been talking for several months about the possibility of the newsman joining Channel 12. Buch is "very interested" in signing Leonard as an anchorman. Although he doesn't plan to split the 6 and 10 p.m. tandem of Unda Alvarez and Kant Dana, Buch is thinking about modifying some other news shows.

Leonard, who was known as the "dean" of Philadelphia newscasters, owns property in Arizona and is retiring here. Buch, meawhile, has hired Dabble Bromberg as a part-time reporter. She worked previously at KUTV and KSL-TV, both in Salt Lake City KOOL-TV (Channel 10) has offered a $714 bonus to employees who purchase new cars during June. After taxes and other deductions are removed, employees will get $500. Channel 10 offered a similar deal to staffers in 1973.

Tom Chauncey, president of KOOL Radio-TV said the station was offering the bonus as a show of support to Phoenix-area car dealers. TELEVISION TONIGHT Recent trades by the Phoenix Suns as well as the club's choices in this week's National Basketball Association college draft will be the subject of a one-hour sports special at 8 on Channel 12.
