Academy leaders (3J Behind The Scenes 1:15 The Word 1:20 Day By Day 1:25 Joy To The World 1:30 M'ASH(R) By BERNIE HARRISON Washington star WASHINGTON You probably didn't see Beau Bridges as a cowboy in that memorable Hallmark play, Stubby Pringle's Christmas (it wound up last in the Nielsens), but you'll probably see him in Martin Ritt's new smash movie Norma Rae, in which he gives another fine performance and you certainly ought to look in on Beau tonight, as The Child Stealer (Channel 12 at 8 p.m.). The made-for-TV movie is the best (and only) bet on the big three networks for grownups, and Beau, along with Blair Brown, who plays his ex-wife, are two of the reasons for watching. The others are an honest, carefully researched script on a topical subject by Sue Milburn the kidnapping of children by one divorced parent and fine direction by Mel Damski. What it has to do with, more than anything else, is the irrationality of love and the fears that make people unable to communicate. Bridges' character fears the loss of his children his ex-wife is in love again and gets a better job in another city so he kidnaps the kids and flees to another state.

That makes it doubly difficult for the wife, whose desperation is wrenchingly depicted. This isn't one-sided at all; you see it from both the father's and mother's point of view. David Groh plays the wife's new love interest; Christina Raines plays David's. Otherwise, Its fund-raising public TV to the rescue, also with a movie, She Done Him Wrong, with Cary Grant and Mae West (8.30 p.m. on Channel 8 but don't trust the time to be exact) and then the Bill Bixby comedy, Steambath (10 p.m.).

Expect pre-emptions for specials and you can also count on live coverage Saturday morning of President Carter's address to the Egyptian parliament. CBS has already cleared time for it. He returns from his first date to find his teen-age daughters waiting up for him. Raj and Rerun, evicted from their apartment after a tenants' protest move in with Shirley and Dee on What Happening! (Channel 3 at 7:30 p.m.). Now it's the latter duo's turn to protest.
